Are people in the DC area just a different kind of rude?

Also not my experience. I grew up here and get really tired of people from other places complaining about the DMV. I have made many beloved friends from different parts of the country and world here. So i do love that DC brings people from all over, but most born and raised here are pretty down-to-earth and friendly in my experience. Also, all of the people complaining about the people, make up the people living here. Right?

Well said! Never met so many truly unhappy people in my life living all over the world. Afghans are more positive than the people in the DMV.

I agree and I think your DC is very perceptive. Good for you for being honest! I have been here for over 30 years, and I find people her every easily impressed - like if you are carrying a certain handbag (NOT last years model, of course), then you are "in". Same thing with the strollers, when all my DC were babies. Most of all, they are most impressed with themselves, thinking that other people are as easily duped as they are, which is the funny part. "We get it, you're insecure, and I am not interested..."

I'm an unpolished white person.
Power-ragey white people look at me like I'm a piece of trash, and black people look at me like I am personally holding them down right now.

Now that I'm mommy/covid-tracked out of my dreams, I resent and regret this whole thing a lot more. I was probably on the track to mommy track anyway, because this shitty world, and the unpolished thing.

DC proper is a nightmare. The people are not chill, not cool and usually blatantly rude. I moved from NYC and I was shocked my first month at the rudeness. We eventually moved to Alexandria and people are a bit nicer.

You SHOULD be regretful. In another dimension, there are like 15 moms in Silver Lake desperately hoping you invite them to brunch tomorrow who think your "unpolished" look is inspirational and extraordinary beautiful. And no, they aren't wine

It's like they were bullied in high school and are rich lawyers now but have never gotten over it. Arlington people seem grouchy also, maybe because no one is as impressed with someone who is living in Arlington like they are with Great Falls or McLean. I feel really bad for them actually and I hope that there are some people who were miserable in high school who have found happiness.

So glad we live in BFE (Fairfax). This just isn't a thing here. No one is like this.

When I spend time with some of my friends from school or some of my brother's work friends, I see this, this insecurity and status consciousness. But not where we live.

I was your son 20-something years ago. Moved away for greener pastures for college and jobs, then returned and realized…yup, I was right to move away. There are a lot of things I like about DC, it will always feel like home, there are def worse places to live, but the DC culture of extremely well educated idiots proudly living miserable, overworked lives, is not for me.

Reading all these replies, I can’t help to think it’s very much dependent on your SES and neighborhood. Maybe it’s a thing with the UMC of the DMV who care about status. In the real world (which DCUM tends to ignore….), I don’t find this to be the case. We live in Vienna. Not in a posh neighborhood. All the parents are well educated but everyone is pretty laid back.
If everyone is your circle is an A hole, you probably are as well.

Comes w/ the territory. They all think they're hot S because they're educated. These are the same people though who have zero qualms about destroying the country through their lobbying/consulting jobs, war machine contractor jobs, etc. etc. It's so funny.

Yep, we live in NOVA but we’re DCUM-poor. I know the types that OP is talking about but I also know a lot of regular nice people.
