Which weight loss clinic? Does BCBS cover the meds for non-diabetics?

NP - I had my meds covered through BCBS via Calibrate. All insurance plans are different in what they cover. Apparently, it is difficult to get Wegovy or Ozempic covered by insurance, but they are experts at it. I pay $25 a month for meds plus $129 a month for the Calibrate coaching program (one year program).

There is an awesome Facebook group that has a ton of information on the drugs and how to get them covered, side effects, etc. Some really amazing success stories too.

Loving this thread… I really want to start Calibrate. I’ve got 100+ lbs to lose. I’m honestly not a huge over eater, are the drugs just appetite suppressants?

For the lab work that they do, what do they do with that info? Like are there other meds or supplements they can prescribe? I’ve been hypothyroid in the past and also know I have high crp levels (no one can find a cause why). Just curious if the lab results inform any other decisions in addition to the weight loss drug.

For the diet, do they give you macros to track?

Outside of calibrate how do you get this medicine covered by insurance? I was thrilled to finally find a local doctor that does medical weight loss that takes insurance but the pharmacy just called and said the wegovy prescription will not be covered. I called and they will only cover trulicity with a prior auth. Is it the same as wegovy assuming the prior auth goes through and is approved?

Hey DCUM,

I needed to come here and say THANK YOU to whomever posted about Calibrate. I have struggled with my weight and binge eating for 25 years, and with COVID drinking weighed more than I ever have. I was feeling horrible about myself and really struggling over the last 6-8 months with too much drinking to manage work stress, family life, and feeling bad about myself.

Because of your posting about Calibrate, I read about it, thought about, and took the leap. It's amazing how I've gone from a shame spiral and berating myself for being weak, having no willpower, and constantly thinking about food to a completely different person in six weeks. The ozempic/weygovy just shut all of that craving/screaming need for carbs, including alcohol. I'm slowly moving away from the bad food/good food dichotomy and seeing I can have a red food and still lose weight. I'm focusing more and more on self care after 10+ years of prioritizing the kids, and am so positive about my future.

I would not be here had I not learned about this program from you, so thank you, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. I am in a much better place, and I owe it to DCUM.

(That said, don't ever lose the snark, 'cause it's hella entertaining. Love how this forum is such a mixed bag of snark, support, and a touch of crazy.)

Where did you get it?

I'm a previous poster and wanted to update--I've lost an additional 10 pounds since November. First time I've ever lost weight over the holidays.

I just finished my coaching and have started phase 2 of calibrate. The slow start bugged me but I've made big changes in each of the pillars they focus on (emotional, sleep, hydration, mindful eating) and I'm hopeful it's going to be a lasting change. I felt silly spending so much money on calibrate and did it mainly for the drug access, but these coachings are helping me stay on track.

I'm up to 1 mg ozempic and it's still working great. I am able to stick with my diet and honestly most days eat under that. It keeps you full. I think it slows down your digestion so you feel full much longer.

One thing that's different about the program is that it doesn't focus much at all on food. They have red foods, things you should minimize, but it seems more realistic in that you're going to eat them,so let's track them and account for them and move on. I struggle with all or nothing on diets so this has been a really good thing for me.

I really recommend the program. I went in knowing everything about diets but my coach is awesome and our little sessions are tailored just for me. It feels like I have a diet psychiatrist which I think I needed, just to talk it out with someone. I've realized in past diets it's always an extremely personal, out in the wilderness type thing for me,where I'm in my head and not nice to myself at all. This is completely different and it's been great to have someone encouraging (and reminding me to not be so negative to myself)

I'm one of the earlier posters as well, and I estimate that I've lost around 40-50 pounds since I started in July. I feel like my weight loss really ramped up when I went to 1mg and I plan to stay here for as long as possible.

Trulicity is not the same as Wegovy. Wegovy and Ozempic are the same. Wegovy is authorized for higher doses than Ozempic. If your insurance plan doesn’t cover it, then it doesn’t cover it. You might be able to try and get Ozempic with prior authorization if your plan overs Trulicity. Wegovy is specifically classified as a weight loss medication. Some insurance plans do not cover weight loss medication.

I have been on Saxenda for about 9 months. At first, I quickly lost about 15 pounds. I did have side effects, but I was amazed at the loss of hunger. Unfortunately, that pretty much stopped after a few months. In fact, at the max dose I would sometimes feel incredibly ravenous in a way I never did off it. So I ended up putting back some of the weight now I've just been afraid to get off it because I'm worried everything will come back. I have an appt to talk to my doctor about Wegovy/Ozempic, although I've heard that Wegovy is not being prescribed right now because of production issues. I was very sad when it stopped working. It was amazing, and I would easily put up with the side effects--even though they were yucky--to just not care about food. It was amazing. I imagine it is how naturally thin people feel! I hope that the Ozempic/Wegovy will work and will not stop working like the Saxenda did.

Curious about you all who have taken these drugs. I'm the fat girl at the gym working hard, hard cardio, lots of lifting. I'm strong. Sometimes I work out 2xs a day. Whenever I've severely cut calories, I feel like shit because I have no energy for the gym.

These drugs seem to help you cut calories. Does this impact your energy?

Anyone get insurance to cover this who is just plain old fat, but nothing else? My blood pressure, cholesterol, and sugars are all excellent. I'm just fat.

So happy to see the Calibrate love here! I've lost over 35 pounds so far (and at 5'4" that makes a big difference) and I agree that it's not just about the drug but about making and reinforcing long-term lifestyle choices.

To immediate PP -- no, my insurance would not cover any of the GLP-1s that Calibrate tried for me because I don't have Type 2 diabetes -- yet -- despite a very strong family history. My markers are all excellent as well but it was certainly not healthy to be carrying 50 extra pounds.

This may be a drug I have to stay on for life, and I'm really worried about the Wegovy supply issues not to mention what happens if I can't keep getting it through Calibrate because the coupon they've been using through the manufacturer expired at the end of 2021 as far as I'm aware. But my plan is to get my doctor to write a script and get Ozempic from Canada if I have to.

To the PP--I have no health issues other than being fat. I'm on calibrate and did the labs which all came back great (no blood sugar issues or anything) I immediately was approved for ozempic/metformin. I just pay my copay for prescriptions ($15). I have Cigna for insurance.

Everything has been through Calibrate,I use their mail order pharmacy and the medical comes to my door every month with no issues so far. I'm really impressed with my experience so far.

It varies by insurance and plan....I have UnitedHealthcare through my job and I got dinged for every single med through Calibrate, despite being 50 pounds or so overweight and having a strong family history of diabetes.

Someone in this thread posted the Facebook group for Ozempic/Wegovy, which has been very helpful. There are people who get Ozempic from Canadian pharmacies, which I might have to do if I can't get Wegovy any more.

Hi. I was on saxenda and it didn't work at all for me maybe a little at the beginning but my body got use to it and it stopped working fairly quickly even after I increased the dose. I am currently on wegovy I started it today I hope it works. A little about me I use to be very fit in great shape with a nice body up until 3 years ago age hormones and genetics started catching up to me and the pandemic didn't help. I end up gaining 60 pounds in the last 3 years and I have had the hardest time losing it and keeping it off. I really hope wegovy works since I work out almost everyday at the gym and couldn't lose weight on my own I hope this is an added push to get my hormones, insulin levels and metabolism back on track. So far day 1 on wegovy absolutely no side effects.
