Why aren't we talking about Novak Djokovic

The classless person was Steffi Graf who quit as McEnroe's partner when they reached the finals of mixed doubles so she could focus on singles, which she lost.

I saw McEnroe playing Borg in a seniors league, and he was again arguing with the refs. He wasn't really upset, just putting on a show for the crowd.

Now this is some sexist bullsh*t. Men having been pulling out of mixed doubles and doubles matches FOREVER if they go deep in a tournament. People expect a man to pull out of doubles if they go far or lose early. It was just shocking that Steffi did it.

I've never heard of this, but I don't follow mixed or regular doubles outside of Davis Cup. I would be upset with men that did this as well. Usually the men that do well in singles don't do well in doubles(perhaps because they have been dropping out of the doubles and I never noticed).

I don't think that is true. In mixed doubles, usually the team with the better ranked male player wins.

I saw him also and he wasn't putting on a show. McEnroe and his idiot brother ruined tennis in the US in a lot of ways. They are elitist, bigoted and have made remarks about black players that were beyond cringey.

What Patrick McEnroe did to Taylor Townsend is abhorrent.

Taylor should have listened, could have reached much better than 60th in rankings. Her arrogance was her downfall. Athletes cannot be that overweight and want USTA to invest in them.

I swear this is the ghost of Patrick McEnroe and I have always wanted to tell you to take your stupidity and shut the f up. He had no business making decisions about who would be supported by the usta and yet, that idiotic privileged fool had the power. He ruined American tennis.

This is so true. He's been an ass this whole time and there were lots of questions about how he got to the level he did when he did. He had some magic ability to not break down after lots of matches when before he was ridiculed for always backing out of matches. He is untrustworthy and fake.

Do you think that him being a Serb has something to do with your dislike of him?

NP. My dislike for him is because while he is an amazing tennis player, he is a below average human being. He is disrespectful and childish. He is also hypocritical and sexist. He is elitist and prioritizes the top of the ATP rankings and does not care much for the journeyman players. In essence, he is a selfish and egotistical human being. Yes, I respect his tennis skill, but I don't think he is a good ambassador for the sport, I don't think he is a hero or role model. Some star athletes are better than others at that. I prefer to support and cheer for respectable and honorable star athletes. Both Federer and Nadal (among many others) are in this category. Djokovic (and a handful of others) are not.

J M Del Potro has been a good example in terms of sportmanship.

Del Potro was definitely an honorable man. There are many top players who have been models of sportsmanship including many top players. Federer is one of the true gentlemen of the game and has exhibited good sportsmanship and honor many times. He is one of the most respectable top players. Federer has won the annual sportsmanship award 13 times, Nadal 3, Djokovic 0. And there is a reason for that.

Exactly!

Which others ones do you think are not?

Not good sportsman? Nick Kyrios, Bernard Tomic, Benoit Paire runs hot and cold, but frequently is an a$$. Looking at the top of the current rankings, Daniel Medvedev (World #2) is not a nice person. Fabio Fognini has a horrible temper and is often rude to officials and linesmen. Andy Murray is one who can be extremely nice and extremely mean and nasty. Recently retired Mikhael Youzhney had a vicious temper. Former world #1 Lleyton Hewitt was known to be extremely mean to tournament staff and media. Quite a few ATP players who are just not nice people as a general rule.

Also no one cares about Olympic tennis to begin with- many top players didn’t bother traveling for it. Total jerky move by him though- no one was forcing him to play mixed doubles but once he commuted he should have seen it through.

No, guys! It can’t possibly be that no one is talking about it because no one even knows about it because no one gives a shit about Olympic tennis, particularly a non-American competing in DOUBLES! It MUST be racism/sexism!!!

Sorry, are you really trying to claim that no one knows who Djokovic is??

they're probably saying that mixed doubles tennis gets around zero airtime on NBC which is how Americans watch the olympics

Every time I turn on the TV in the past few days, it’s either wrestling, track or tennis.

It’s actually funny as hell that some of you think your opinion matters when Djokovic is still going to end up with more Grand Slams than any Roger or Rafa. Clearly you just want to fixate on any white male who is a convenient target, regardless of his nationality, to make you feel better about Serena’s inability to top Margaret Court or Biles’ inability to compete during this Olympics.

Nah, I just can’t stand Djokovic for the many many reasons mentioned in this thread. If all of the other players you mentioned never existed I’d still hate Djokovic. He’s a pompous a$$ all on his own (not in comparison to anyone else).

I don’t think my opinion matters for anything and neither does yours.

Are you new to tennis? Djokovic’s behavior problem started long before Biles competed in her first Olympics and Serena got anywhere close to Margaret Court. Djoker can win 30 slams and will never receive the level of global respect as Fed or Rafa.

I see a Djokovic fan has found this thread. In before the complaints about Western media bias against him and blah blah blah. 😃😃

Um...Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal would like a word....

What for? Djokovic has already achieved things neither of them could or ever will. And he still has a couple of good years still left in him.

Yeah, it really pains me to acknowledge it but Djokavic will probably go down as the GOAT simply because he has caught up to Fed and Nadal but still seems to have plenty of life left in him whereas I'd be surprised if Fed or Nadal win another grand slam again. It's unfortunate.

Djokavic is not terribly popular with tennis fans but I think there are a few reasons this isn't getting more attention. At least in the US, coverage of Olympic tennis is pretty scant, particularly if no Americans are in contention. Hard to suddenly drum up media interest when it hasn't been covered to begin with. While I suspect most general sporting fans in the US know who he is, his mixed doubles partner would be unknown to them. For better or worse people were INVESTED in Simone Biles (too much so IMO), which is why her withdrawal garnered so much attention.

DP here. I never heard of the guy- I opened the thread because I wondered why we should be talking about somebody I’ve never heard of. I don’t think tennis is all that popular a sport, even outside of the Olympics and I don’t follow it, although I do know who Serena and Venus are. I don’t follow gymnastics outside of the Olympics either, actually, but I’d certainly heard of Simone Biles and knew that she was an amazing Olympic champion.

But this tennis guy, no, I’ve never heard of him before.

Americans aren’t very bright when it comes to tennis, which isn’t surprising given that the USA hasn’t had a top male player for over two decades and its female players are either in decline, wildly inconsistent, or not yet ready for prime time. They don’t realize that the media always wants to have villains from Eastern Europe or Russia to set against some Prince Charming or ingenue from the west (a role played at various times by Chris Evert, Tracy Austin, Pete Sampras, and Roger Federer). Federer has been caught on tape swearing at officials and blowing off fans, but his fan base is too invested in his image to acknowledge he’s human, too.

I'll be honest - my view of sportsmanship is more traditional. I have, in the past, criticized the behavior of athletes, both male and female, who have behaved as poor sports, including Serena Williams. That doesn't change my opinion of their athletic achievements. I prefer more gracious and respectful competitors.

However, seeing how Novak's behavior is barely mentioned while a huge segment of the population has devoted considerable time and effort criticizing Simone Biles. The fact remains that whatever you think of her decision from a competition standpoint, her sportsmanship and support of teammates and competitors during these Olympics has been exemplary. Her accomplishments in the sport speak for themselves. People want to hate her for some reason, but a racquet throwing temper tantrum from a male player isn't even worth mentioning. It's hard to think of any explanation other than sexism and/or racism.

I agree. What do you think about Wimbledon scheduling Medveded in such a crappy manner? On Talk Tennis, many agree it was done in purpose to give Federer a chance to advance. A pointless chance tbh.
