Another nanny and vaccine question

We mandate the vaccine in our small business but have a couple of employees with medical exemptions. If she provides you with a letter from her doctor, you need to back off IMO.

I disagree completely! As the owner of a small business and employer of a nanny, I have mandated that everyone is vaccinated against covid. We’re in a pandemic and all exemptions have gone out the window. As long as the virus spreads it will continue to mutate. It would be completely irresponsible to subject my vaccinated employees to possible exposure due to those who won’t get vaccinated.

I will fire anyone who refuses to be covid vaccinated.

My sister can't be vaccinated, as it could kill her. I'm glad she doesn't work for you.

She should transition to a job she can do without client contact. She could kill someone.

Client contact has nothing to do with it. More and more employers are trying to mandate vaccines regardless of circumstances. Thankfully, my sister’s employer is both grateful for her expertise and cognizant that nobody else with the same qualifications will take the job, so they’re not making demands that she ignore medical advice.

Fwiw, my sister doesn’t have any outward facing contacts (in person) at all. She’s a disabled veteran with a service dog. She’s also doing a job she loves working with an NPO, directing others to be her hands when she’s not capable. Any donations she solicits from businesses via phone and email are picked up by her workers. And every single one of her workers understands what she’s capable of doing and why she’s in charge. Oh, and discrimination suits are nasty things, especially when they get picked up by large organizations like DAV.

Well, actually you can get fired but it's illegal and you have the right to pursue them in court. Problem is no one has the time or money to do that.

So we are saying the same thing. You have to bend to your employers will -- even if it's illegal if you want to keep your job. Happens in corporations too BUT I have noticed that it is very true that nanny's are not considered 1st class human beings by their families.

The slavery word comes up and honestly fits. The level of entitlement that these families have is incomprehensible to me. It seems like they don't acknowledge that they have a human working for them and I definitely see them expecting things that they themselves won't do.

Slavery troll is back again.

New Poster here. Didn't know there was a slavery troll. I was stating my observations. I had seen mention of slavery and I almost used indentured servant but they are not paying off debt to the MB. The level of expectation for the hourly rate seems way out of proportion. Maybe people exaggerate what they're asking for on this board but it comes across as treating the nanny as a subhuman.

Not sure if I should start a new thread or not, but our nanny still isn’t vaccinated and appears to be extremely hesitant too. Conversations encouraging her haven’t gone well. WWYD? Now that things have opened to everyone here in DC (and I think all states) it seems like she needs to go get it. I have to put my kids first, right? Reading this thread it makes me think I’d be a crappy employer for making this mandatory along with other shots.

It does NOT make you a crappy employer.

Set a deadline of one week to show you that she's at least looked into getting an appointment, then June 1 for actually getting the appointment. Make sure that she follows through and shows you her vaccine card.

Let her know that if she chooses not to do this, it's her right. But because you need to take care of your family, you need to know if you need to make other arrangements.

+1. We also notified our house cleaner that we cannot have her back until she is fully vaxxed.

+2. And I’d rather be a good mother than a good employer.

Are you ok with potentially bringing fatal virus into your home? No? Then ask her to see the card.

I am a Nanny and even though my employers believe me (or say they do!), I still provide them w/both a photo text of my card as well as showing them my actual vaccination record.
Just makes me feel better to avoid any awkwardness.

+1. I have proof of all my vaccinations to show my employers. Covid is no different. Same with my CPR certification.

My nanny forwarded me the email she got as her appointment confirmation. She has not shown me her card yet. Thoughts?

Ask to see it so you can make a copy.

What reason do I give her for needing a copy?

You need a copy for the kids’ pediatrician who is contact tracing.

Why would they be contract tracing if the kids don't have covid?

So you're encourage OP to LIE to her nanny? You have no room to complain if your nanny (or anyone else) ever lies to you!

This isn't so hard. Just tell your nanny that proof of vaccination is a condition of employment. Anyone can be fully vaccinated (including that 2 week post-vaccination period) within 5 weeks at this point. There are plenty of available appointments and there are free Uber rides available (I just got some random text about it this morning.) Anyone who is not vaccinated/in the middle of the vaccination process at this point is because they do not WANT it right now. And that's her right. But she can not be employed by you.
I'd give her 3 days to show me a vaccination card, with at least the first vaccine noted.
