Oh boy. Proper English is oppressive.

Assuming only the way white peoples talk is “proper” is oppression, genius.

Looking at this thread, why would he? Some of you don’t understand that school personnel who aren’t valued by that school don’t owe the school anything. An opportunity came and he took it.

Fair enough. I’m sure the parents will be totally different in FCPS. And no one will view his quitting mid-year as any kind of red flag.

Actually they won’t. Because he didn’t quit. He accepted a new job. This happens all the time. Midyear positions come open and need filled.

You probably need to use another example. He went to Glasgow in FCPS. FCPS is just as big a mess as APS.

"white peoples"?

Are "brown peoples" homogenous or are you just a bigot?

What do you know about Mrs. Hess the vice principal who will be acting? I honestly don't know anything about her other than she writes really nice notes to kids in the school yearbook and takes ads for kids who might not be able to afford a yearbook ad.

She's nice. I dealt with her in meetings relating to my son's IEP. I didn't feel that she had great understanding of how the special education process worked, but on the other hand, she was trying and was kind and seemed to care about my son.

What is it with ACPS and denying assaults?

What is it with ACPS tolerating residency fraud? Back when school used to actually happen I'd see a half dozen cars with Maryland plates dropping kids off every single morning- this wasn't split custody scenario, the kids lived in MD.

There's a different set of rules for certain people. I'll let you figure out what the commonality is.

Why would anyone travel to Alexandria for it's terrible schools?

The different set of rules are for the PTA and PTAC parents who are always there to defend ACPS (and their home values).

At Maury or elsewhere? I do now of a Maury parent who publicly celebrated her son attacking another student and yet was somehow granted permission to serve on the PTAC. So odd.

I know what you're talking about, and this to me is the single most puzzling and off-putting thing about PTAC to me.

PTAC is a bunch of bullies so her being recruited to serve on PTAC shouldn't be surprising. They go about their business with a total lack of self-awareness of their own cruelty.

I will take that over knowledge any day! Of course, it’s nice when you can get both…

"Nice" is not a qualification to be the admin designee for special education services. She doesn't earn a lot of $$ to be nice.

In ACPS, the MO of those with “knowledge” of IEPs is to limit the amount of services as much as possible. “Nice” would be a welcome change from my perspective.

Perhaps the shifting demographic dynamic at Maury may have been a contributing factor in Mr. Powell's departure but my guess is that he was recruited and presented with a opportunity he could not refuse. A FCPS middle school that is in the TJ vicinity with 60+% of students receiving FARMs - presents a compelling challenge - for anyone wanting to effect measurable change and burnish their turnaround credentials while doing so. And who wouldn't jump at the opportunity to address those challenges along with more responsibility and pay? And, leaving in May? FCPS probably didn't give him a choice and wanted him to hit the ground running given everything that needs to be done.

As for Mrs. Hess, we have had positive experiences with her and heard positive things about her from other parents and teachers. We would be happy if she was promoted to principal - seems it would be beneficial for the community to have someone with institutional knowledge to provide continuity going into the next school year.

OP here. I know the law and ACPS policies pretty well at this point, so the fact that she was amenable to making changes once I pointed them out was ok by me.

Powell didn't even finish his third year yet. The demographics at Maury haven't shifted at all in that time. He's just a quitter. No surprise there.
