Maury Principal Leaving (ACPS)

I’m sure he faced many micro aggressions at Maury. I heard Him called “lazy” and “unprofessional” on the playground too many times to count. I know That being the only black, male principal of an elementary school in the state was important to him, but I also Know that he felt dissapointed by the changing demographics of the school. Maury used to be one of the most diverse schools but many of our black families from the Parker grey neighborhood are being forced out of old town by demolition and new development. He hoped that we would advocate for continued diversity to the school board. He told me one time that he was from Kentucky where racists fly a flag. Here, he said, they wear a mask and you think they are a friend until they show their colors. He was a great principal and had such a positive impact on our kids. He has a bright future ahead of him and let this be a wake up call for our school parents who need to appreciate great talent when we have it.

Maury parent here. Agree with this 100 percent.

I didn't find him lazy or unprofessional, but he also wasn't warm towards the kids and approachable in the same way that the prior principal, Ms. Jackson was. He did an adequate job of responding to a concern our family had about our child being bullied. He was fine, but not special in the way that Ms. Jackson was. He didn't do anything wrong, but is very replaceable.

I don't have an opinion of the man, but there aren't a lot of male principals, or teachers an elementary school to begin with

It is true that there are not enough male teachers. However, there are a disproprortionate number of male principals vs. male teachers, which means that often, female teachers or vice principals are not being promoted.

I’ve also heard many people advocate for the new name of Maury to be “rosemont” because ACPS keeping “naming schools after black people”. Maury parents have been existing in a school named after a confederate and haven’t said a thing about it for years. They have their elitist and exclusionary gala each year and complain about a “lazy” black principal. It’s not veiled racism. It’s overt.

Or you know, there are more thank just black students in ACPS, and Rosemont is the neighborhood the elementary school is in (just facts). How much more inclusive can you get? Sounds like your the one with an agenda and micro aggressions to me.

*Corrected for spelling and grammar. Which is guess is racist too.

My agenda is for equity- which happens to be the agenda of the entire school district. The school is located inside the neighborhood of Rosemont but the student population includes much of the Parker Gray neighborhood as well. Rosemont was redlined until nearly the 1980s and was entirely white, it is still almost entirely white. The students that come from Parker Gray are mostly not white. Naming the school “Rosemont” would be identifying the school as a white school in a white neighborhood. That was the exact same mission behind naming a school after a confederate in the 1920s.

The scuttlebutt is that he refused to cave to pressure from a person/family with a specific agenda. The person was crude in its tactics but that is no great surprise knowing that particular family. This is about race and an arrogant display of classism.

Is this an internal thing or in the news?

Would love to know the scuttlebutt.

Then you better get on that letter writing campaign to rename the neighborhood too. Don't forget to rebuke the Superintendent for referencing Parker-Gray as "Black Rosemont" in the last meeting when discussing Ms. Naomi Brooks. Meanwhile schools have been closed the past year and the students and families who have suffered the most, are the ones who have the least. #equity

Is this why ACPS doesn't teach grammar?

Assuming people are unintelligent or unprofessional because they use AAVE, which is a dialect that has defined speech patterns and its own grammar, and not standardized WHITE English is racist. It is.

I completely agree. But I don't think the solution is not to teach any grammar or a standard curriculum. I'll beg off now, bc I don't want to derail the thread.

I had two children at Maury (currently had one) and Mr. Powell's grammar was just fine. I did not find him to be an unprofessional or bad person, just not a very dynamic one. I had one mildly unplesant interaction with him in relation to my child's IEP, but it all worked out fine in the end. He was an ok principal, but I am sure that his replacement will be as well.

The recommended name (by the Superintendant) is going to be Naomi Brooks Elementary School, not Rosemont Elementary School. The chances of the name being something other than what the Superintendant recommends are nil.

He is taking over as principal of Glasgow MS in FCPS, which until recently had an excellent principal (who left earlier this year to become principal of a nearby high school). Sounds like the Glasgow community may not be as high maintenance as Maury, but if he is merely adequate there will be complaints because he’s following a superstar.
