SYC U-9 showing their “class” again, huh.

Here’s a post I wrote about the one experience with the SYC U-9 boys team we had this fall — in short, this behavior isn’t surprising. And for the record, we lost to Bethesda by far more than the game we lost to SYC, so the post below wasn’t motivated by being thoroughly beaten.

“ My son's U-little team player against SYC in the Capital Cup tournament this past weekend.

I was impressed by the SYC players' physicality -- they clearly had been drilled on how to use their arms/bodies to push the other players away. There were some flagrant fouls, but I attribute that to the boys just not putting into practice correctly what they've been taught -- not to malice or bad sportsmanship.

Whether those types of skills -- blocking and pushing and the rougher physical aspects of the game -- are whether the focus should be at U-little or not, I can't say. They don't seem like particularly technical skills to learn, and I'd rather my boys learn ball control and positioning/passing skills, but I certainly can't argue that getting those rougher skills down early doesn't yield results: SYC beat us and every other team pretty handily.

We've lost to better teams, and we've lost to worst teams, and I don't take it too seriously with U-littles. However, I must add that the U9 coach for SYC was the most obnoxious coach I've ever seen in years of having my children play U-little. Constant, non-stop berating of his players for The. Entire. Game. I mean, his team was winning by 5 goals and they're playing well (obviously) but literally the entire game, the SYC coach was angrily screaming at his players, full-throated bloviating yelling and screaming about any single little lost 50-50 ball, or any successful move or passing by the other team.

I have never in my life seen such an angry, unpleasant coach for such little kids. Again, he wasn't yelling at the ref or at the other team ... he was berating his own (very successful) players for any little perceived mistake. It was embarrassing and borderline abusive, in my opinion.

It's a shame, because we have been considering other clubs in the area, but SYC is firmly crossed off of our list due to their U9 coach. There's no way I would want my 8 year old subjected to that kind of aggression and anger -- heaven help those boys when they are actually in a close game or on the losing side. Really not a good look, SYC. These kids are 8 years old.”

This description of SYC is spot on. The U9/2012 SYC girls are the same way.

The opponents need to learn how to clothesline - no cards at that age

Several kids on my sons u9 team cable in the day got yellows. Never a red. My other son had an opponent get a yellow card at u8.

A lot of it stems from the fact that they played 7v7 as U8s before COVID hit. They are very good but just a lot further along in patterns of play. It'll take a couple years but other clubs will catch up and beat them.

Both squads do have some really good players however. Very sound and technical.

Folks need to brush this off. Huge blowouts happen at this age. It's not what you should be focused on but on your child's individual development. And yes, my DS team has lost to both clubs badly.

My DS is on the same boat with losing badly to both of them early in the season as well. His teammates were impressed by how good they were but their esteem wasn't hurt by the blowout. I can tell you that they were excited to play and have been working hard to improve. Having a good coach matters. My DS and team have improved and would probably still lose to them. It's U9, I'm not worried. My DS is improving and that's all that matters.

Interesting that SYC 2012 is playing on age in the upcoming Arlington tournament but Bethesda 2012 is playing up (and in the top group): https://events.gotsport.com/events/default.aspx?eventid=80113

When will these two u-little juggernauts meet to decide 2012 supremacy once and for all?

Not a competition. Bethesda usually wins even playing up a year top flight.

10-1 SYC

The samba boyz are ruthless! Ha! I would cut them some slack though...my DS lost to them and he said they had a good coach and the players were cool/respectable.. Unlike Barca NoVA Yellow!

CCL doesn't post scores but SYC beat BSC's top team by a few goals at a recent game (I think..based on the cheering and the amount of orange shirt goals going in). Our team was playing on the other side of the field..

Sandbagging?

Entering tournaments below your level, or flights below your level to make sure you win

Um... Dear Non Soccer Parent - Coaches do not get to pick the flight or the bracket.

Um ... and I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

Sure, extremely believable Non-SYC parent. No kid would say a coach screaming like the SYC coach screams is "good".

How many MYS players will make the Samba Boyz or 2012G top team?
How many MYS DS parents will want to associate their FS with the SYC yell-and-run-up-the-score coach?

Heard all returning MYS families will receive a copy of Rosetta Stone to help make the transition a bi smoother.

Well for one those two teams don’t share a coach, two different people. Secondly, a number of the Samba Boyz already drive from all over the area to choose to play for their coach, so I imagine if any of the McLean parents wanted to or could make the team, they’re already there.
