That sounds awfully like you want to use school closures as a negotiating tool for the social policies you'd like to see.

The problem is that there are no good options.
Because Trump, and the Republican Party, screwed up the COVID response. At best. (At worst they sabotaged it intentionally for political advantage.)

Almost like the political advantage that the Dems - including Kamala - are fueling with questioning vaccines. What a bunch of idiots.

Please stop with the blame Trump crap -so old and so irrelevant after next week. Does Trump control Italy as well? They too, are suffering horribly.

The only option here is to live with the virus and understand and accept how we live with it. Children should be first in our priorities.

I'm not ok living with the virus given how serious it is. If our kids are our priority we need to go back on quarantine and get rid of it.

What? Shutting down large gatherings is not a social policy ANYONE wants to see. It is solely a public health emergency measure. Propping up suffering families is something I'd like to see a little more as far as general safety nets, but the need for help (and help to businesses) is far beyond what would be normally necessary or reasonable, as well.

Several large marches/protests occurred in DC this summer - and as recently as last week. Do you support shutting those down to prevent Covid spread?

If they're like the insane one last week where no one was wearing masks and were deliberately avoiding taking any precautions, yes. If, like the BLM protests this summer, people take care to remain masked and responsible, it seems fine--recall that these protests weren't correlated with an increase in cases.

Hey, you'll be pleased to know that the mortality has plummeted!

I think you'd have a hard time finding a medical or public health professional that thinks a lockdown would "get rid of it.". At best we could decrease transmission rates, but the effect would be temporary. Just look at Europe to see that.

The government propping up "families and businesses that are suffering financially" absolutely sounds like a social policy. I'd be happy to support that as a policy, but I don't think children's education should be held hostage until and unless that passes.

Again with this story line? Yes, same stories months ago. They get clicks. The guidelines have always been in place. They aren't new. They were not just created.

They are overwhelmed because they are likely hospitalizing everyone at this point with very little discrimination much like NYC did in the early days. They just don't have the experience dealing with the virus yet.
They will get there quickly.

Actually it is new. These selfish mom groups started posting after testing became widely available and summer was over. They’re encouraging community spread.

At this point, my only reaction to articles like this is "ok, good to know"

I am tired of people acting as if we are in some Sci-Fi movie where someone infected drops dead instantly and there is no treatments and no person ever, ever recovers.

225,000 dead in six months but nice to know it doesn’t matter to you.

A few months ago the ‘only option’ was to call the virus a hoax and then say it would be over tomorrow. Interesting that you pivot with your Dear Leader’s talking points and spout the same stupid nonsense.

Citation? I've seen nothing supporting a claim that morality rates have increased.

As usual, you all read the headlines but not the actual scientific article.

"It should be acknowledged that in our analysis, we were unable to account for different precautions regarding school reopening that were adopted by some countries, such as physical distancing within classrooms (eg, limiting class sizes and placing transparent dividers between students) and outside classrooms (eg, physical distancing during meal times, recreation, and transportation), enhanced hygiene (eg, routine deep cleaning and personal handwashing and face masks), and others (eg, thermal temperature checks on arrival). Such precautions are imperative for safer school reopening. A COVID-19 outbreak was reported in a high school in Israel 10 days after its reopening; students were in crowded classrooms and were not instructed to wear face masks due to high temperatures. In addition, it should be noted that we did not consider the normal school holidays in some countries. We were also unable to assess the effect of reopening different levels of school (eg, elementary vs middle schools) since the effect might differ by finer age bands within school-age children and adolescents.”

I'll add that I've looked at the data, and very few of the 131 countries actually had school open during the study period. In many of those that did open schools, the R was already increasing at a steady rate, and school did not change this rate further, making it suspect to conclude that an increase after school opening was actually caused by schools opening.

If you want to keep schools closed in the US because the country of Andorra had an increase in cases after opening schools, I question your judgment.
