From a DCPS Teacher

The teacher bashing is ridiculous. People don't know how much work it takes to be a teacher - even a so-so teacher has to do a ton to just get by.

My rage is at DCPS pushing demands on to schools and teachers willy nilly.

This is not normal times so I don't get why my kindergartner and 3rd grader need to be given so much work and material to cover online.

No matter what Bowser agrees to, teachers will still refuse to go to work. There will always be some excuse.

It's time to put teachers' completely unreasonable objections aside, and get kids back in the classroom.

Funny how doctors and nurses can take care of sick people all day long without all the carrying on we see from teachers.

Who the f*ck cares.

Why isn’t EVERYONE back at work? Is everyone teleworking evil?

Why just teachers and not social workers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech pathologists, counselors, aides, school nurses, etc?

The teacher hate by the same three people is annoying. If you hate teachers HOMESCHOOL. Or MOVE.

Some people can do their work at home and some people cannot. It turns out that most teachers cannot. I know this hurts your professional pride, to be lumped in with people who work at grocery stores, and not office workers, but that is the reality of the situation.

If you can't accept this, quit.

Surgeons also can't work from home.

BTW if parents don't send their kids to school then it doesn't matter if the teacher is there.

I’m not sure why this person thinks I’d hate to be compared to a grocer. I’m eternally grateful to them and believe all grocery stores should just deliver.

The fact that they mentioned them is actually telling of what they think about them...

Also I am slated to teach in person, voluntarily. But I’m sick of this teacher bashing. A school environment is not just teachers and the WTU didn’t make any decisions. Being vocal is not the same thing as making decisions.

WTU made the decision to sue DCPS to prevent an in person return to schools. Decision.

Good - because WTU's job is to protect their membership which are our teachers. We should all want to protect them because they are the ones who protect our kids.

So you think supports for students with IEPs, mental crisis, emotional supports can all be done from home, eh?

What a joke, you have no clue. You literally responded just to respond not actually answer.

How about you homeschool or just freakin move?

No, I believe those people should also be working in person. Do your jobs or quit.

It's a stupid thing to sue over. Are they suing because teachers basically should not accept any risk whatsoever, ever, unlike most of the rest of society? Go to work.

Idiots don’t even have the right info and are droning on about teachers. Take care of your kids! Teachers job is to teach. If your kid is behind, get tutoring or maybe they need an IEP.

PERB isn’t suing. But you guys believe anything. Rich. Can’t wait til this is over and it’s back to complaining about other white people crap.

Don't speak for me; what the union has done is a travesty.

Every time I leave my house I am taking a risk and until there is a vaccine it will never be safe.

The union's kool-aid is poisonous.

Then leave, oh wait you stay for the bonus don't you?

F*ckin hypocrite. Work at a charter school.

I am a different DCPS teacher and agree with PP. the vitriol is unnecessary and doesn’t help people support the union. I can be a union member without blindly agreeing with everything the union does. And I didn’t join DCPS for the union, I joined because I wanted to work in an urban public school system.

Be transparent, you joined for the bonus. You can't get it without being a member.

I also don't fully agree with the union but I'll stand by for a safe reopening, as long as we actually REOPEN.

Ha sure I joined the union for the $800 bonus I get after taxes. It’s probably a wash after you factor in union dues. I joined years ago when I was persuaded by the union rep at my school. But please keep making unfounded assumptions that every teacher who doesn’t agree with the union on this is money grubbing and a hypocrite or whatever.

It's about 7,500 after tax (DC tax). Guess you've never been highly effective before, figures. But to get that you have to be a part of the union.
I also just said I don't agree with everything but I'm also not kissing strangers bums on a forum, just so I can seem like a 'different' teacher.

How do you get a bonus without being highly effective? Guess you’ve never read the IMPACT guidebook. Not sure how you can turn a $2,000 bonus into $7,500 AFTER taxes.

If you teach math or English and earn a highly effective rating at one of the 20 lowest schools, then the bonus is higher. WOTP I can get $2000 pre-tax.

Hahahahaha omg. ‘Urban schools’ You teach in an upper NW school. Lol. Thanks this made my night. Sorry for the bonus comment.

Um multiple posters have been responding to this thread. I never said I worked at a school in upper NW (I am not PP). You seem like an unnecessarily combative person. And please laugh at my experience in urban high schools and the things I’ve seen and dealt with in my classroom. You are just looking to make it seem like you are the only ‘real’ teacher on here because your school is so rough. Get over yourself or add something useful to the conversation.

Actually it turns out that they can do so, and are doing so, and will continue to do so.

Nobody's quitting. Everybody's continuing to work safely.

Sorry if that hurts your arrogant, misplaced sense of superiority over the people who teach your kids.

Not OP but hahahahaha bonus. I’ve never heard a teacher say “I’m here for the bonus”.

I don’t have a problem with Liz Davis but I do have a problem with this tiny, loud sub group within the union screaming nonsense. It’s INSANE.
Parents- it takes two. Do not paint Bowser and Ferebee as the saviors doing right by kids and families. You are way too smart to fall for this PR traps. the union and the mayor have no plans. They both failed tremendously.

Many private schools had to lay off staff and the teachers know it. You can pretend that your teachers are somehow better because they are choosing to come in when others aren't. The reality is your private school teachers are accepting risk in order to keep their paycheck.

DCPS teacher here with a child at a DC private school.
**You don’t know what you are talking about.**
and believe me, if you were at my child’s private school, you would be miserable. NOTHING would be good enough for you. The reason why in person works for private schools is because the safety measures are state of the art. Dcps could NEVER afford the safety measures- not even close. Also, unlike public schools, you can’t send your kid to school sick. It’s shameful.
You sound like the kind of parent who would send their child to school with a fever. I know your type. You think your mid management govt job is important. Or you are an angry 40 year old associate. Get a life.

I agree - the teacher’s job is to teach. All the kids in their room - even the one who are behind. And if they are behind, it’s the teacher’s job to help figure out why. Perhaps they do need an IEP (such a lovely tone to this part of your post). Perhaps there is another problem at school like bullying. Or just perhaps the teacher is not teaching well enough to reach the student. Do you always deflect to the IEP when one of your students is behind?

Go ahead and ask the chancellor to fire all the teachers. I am a teacher and so fine with it. I’m sure you can just replace us all easily since we are doing nothing all day apparently

Sorry if that hurts your arrogant, misplaced sense of superiority over the people who teach your kids.

No teacher has stated when they think it will be "safe" enough to return to work. Can someone please state what needs to be in place or take place for it to be "safe"?
