Don't speak for me; what the union has done is a travesty.

Every time I leave my house I am taking a risk and until there is a vaccine it will never be safe.

The union's kool-aid is poisonous.

Then leave, oh wait you stay for the bonus don't you?

F*ckin hypocrite. Work at a charter school.

I am a different DCPS teacher and agree with PP. the vitriol is unnecessary and doesn’t help people support the union. I can be a union member without blindly agreeing with everything the union does. And I didn’t join DCPS for the union, I joined because I wanted to work in an urban public school system.

Be transparent, you joined for the bonus. You can't get it without being a member.

I also don't fully agree with the union but I'll stand by for a safe reopening, as long as we actually REOPEN.

Ha sure I joined the union for the $800 bonus I get after taxes. It’s probably a wash after you factor in union dues. I joined years ago when I was persuaded by the union rep at my school. But please keep making unfounded assumptions that every teacher who doesn’t agree with the union on this is money grubbing and a hypocrite or whatever.

It's about 7,500 after tax (DC tax). Guess you've never been highly effective before, figures. But to get that you have to be a part of the union.
I also just said I don't agree with everything but I'm also not kissing strangers bums on a forum, just so I can seem like a 'different' teacher.

How do you get a bonus without being highly effective? Guess you’ve never read the IMPACT guidebook. Not sure how you can turn a $2,000 bonus into $7,500 AFTER taxes.

Wait... I have been a union member since the beginning of this school year. When do I get my first bonus? What I learned when I went for work at DCPS is that I am a union member even if I do not join (pay dues.) Because I benefit from collective bargaining I pay dues. Otherwise I would be a freeloader. I *loathe* the union and I am annoyed the school rep is chasing me around for my personal email so I get sent the propaganda that has my colleagues crying during staff meetings like going back to in person teaching is a death sentence. The union isn't listening to my or hearing my voice so why should stand behind theirs?

Why do people expect perfection in a pandemic?

This teacher’s second point is that dual language isn’t being respected. I’m sorry, but I am dismissing this out of hand right there. I assume what that means is that she thinks too many English speaking teachers are being forced back to O-A rather than Spanish ones? Talk about not caring about kids at all.

No matter what Bowser agrees to, teachers will still refuse to go to work. There will always be some excuse.

It's time to put teachers' completely unreasonable objections aside, and get kids back in the classroom.

Funny how doctors and nurses can take care of sick people all day long without all the carrying on we see from teachers.

If you teach math or English and earn a highly effective rating at one of the 20 lowest schools, then the bonus is higher. WOTP I can get $2000 pre-tax.

Who the f*ck cares.

Why isn’t EVERYONE back at work? Is everyone teleworking evil?

Why just teachers and not social workers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech pathologists, counselors, aides, school nurses, etc?

The teacher hate by the same three people is annoying. If you hate teachers HOMESCHOOL. Or MOVE.

You actually have to be highly effective to get the bonus.

It’s interesting that DCPS actually forces you to join the union if you want to be rewarded for being an excellent teacher.

I think we’d have less union members if not for this fact. Waste of money every month!!!!

Anonymous wrote:No, I don't feel sorry for teachers anymore. I did in the spring, but no more. DCPS is trying to put kids back in the classroom without the support of its teachers. This is why we are going back to school with these stupid CARES classrooms and one class per grade for in-person learning. BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TEACHERS WILLING TO COME BACK TO SCHOOL.

Don't like the Term 2 structure? THEN COME BACK TO SCHOOL.

Even if every teacher came back willingly you don't have enough teachers to do it at a distant and with the smaller classrooms. Schools also don't have the space.

So yeah - don't feel sorry for teachers fine - but logistically your mindset doesn't work.

You do understand what a doctor/nurse does is different than a teacher right? You did go to school? A teacher has to deal with a 6 year old without a parent for 6 hours straight. A doctor spends about 20 minutes with you and doesn't really engage. And BTW healthcare workers are dying from this and germ management is in their job description. A teacher is NOT supposed to do 2,000 jobs to manage a public health crisis outside of the 2,000 other jobs they have to do.

Some people can do their work at home and some people cannot. It turns out that most teachers cannot. I know this hurts your professional pride, to be lumped in with people who work at grocery stores, and not office workers, but that is the reality of the situation.

If you can't accept this, quit.

Surgeons also can't work from home.

BTW if parents don't send their kids to school then it doesn't matter if the teacher is there.

So you think supports for students with IEPs, mental crisis, emotional supports can all be done from home, eh?

What a joke, you have no clue. You literally responded just to respond not actually answer.

How about you homeschool or just freakin move?

I’m not sure why this person thinks I’d hate to be compared to a grocer. I’m eternally grateful to them and believe all grocery stores should just deliver.

The fact that they mentioned them is actually telling of what they think about them...

Also I am slated to teach in person, voluntarily. But I’m sick of this teacher bashing. A school environment is not just teachers and the WTU didn’t make any decisions. Being vocal is not the same thing as making decisions.
