Class of 2020 College Placement Results

Unfortunately, Michigan is getting extremely selective. Smart students from DC often get turned down. Wisconsin, Minnesota and Indiana are becoming the new Michigan.

I didn't care for Duke when I visited. It seemed homogeneous and cloistered. It felt like someone has taken the Michigan fraternity and sorority community, added a few thousand people with southern accents, subtracted a few thousand people with Midwestern accents, demolished all the nearby restaurants and stores, and created a walled-in university.
.
I chose Michigan. I chose it over real Ivy, not just Southern imitation Ivy.

Since then I've met many extremely bright, thoughtful people who went to Duke, including several people of color who told me they actually found it to be welcoming. My negative first impression was probably wrong, or at least way too harsh.

Michigan may not be for everyone but it was great for me and most only friends. Some people find it overwhelming but most people end up joining nice small communities there. The post-college placement and networking opportunities are incredible whether you want to go into business, law, medicine, public service, the arts, or just about anything.

Different strokes for different folks.

I like Michigan but Michigan is a state school. That means the best from that state will attend that school, which is fine. But anyone that acts like a state school is as competitive or as hard to get into as a school that has a national reach, without a mission to educate in state kids, is just being self serving. As for Duke, anyone that really knows the school knows that southern accents are in short supply as most of the kids are from the Northeast and places like, gasp, DC! Indiana and Wisconsin are not as prestigious as Michigan (again, this is just someone that wants us to care about Big 10 culture) and Michigan is not as prestigious as Duke, Brown, Penn, Dartmouth and the like. And Duke is not as prestigious as Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Stanford. Please stop with the nonsense. Michigan is a fine school. It’s got an incredible sports program and therefore awesome school spirit, which matters. But it’s not Yale Law School though. It’s not Cambridge. Hell, it’s not McGill. It’s Michigan and you went there. Congrats.

In just one example, and there are many, in the 2020 edition of Best Colleges and Universities, Duke University is ranked #10 among National Universities, ahead of three Ivies. Univ Michiganis ranked much further down at #25 in National Universities, tied with Carnegie Melon.
https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities

Additionally, Duke's acceptance rate is 9.86% whereas Univ. of Michigan's is 26.5%.
Duke's average SAT for accepted students is almost 100 points higher than Michigans (1510 v. 1420)

There is just no way anyone can plausibly claim Michigan is more prestigious or the better school than Duke.

This isn’t about rankings. Folks who are Michigan through and through - and there are a whole lot of them - don’t even know Duke exists. Just walk around UNWDC. There’s a Michigan flag and “Go Blue” magnet on almost every block. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Duke signs anywhere...doesn’t mean it’s not a great school, it just doesn’t have the same following.

This is probably the stupidest post trying to prove a school is great.... ever. Just Moronic. By every measure that is actually relevant, Duke is a superior school. You can have your Michigan flags and magnets. I’ll pick the Duke alum every time.

Michigan is a better academic school than Duke like Michigan is a better football school than Ohio State. This isn’t a real conversation. Only a person that is blinded by their love for the maze and blue would even begin to make such an absurd claim. Duke is objectively more prestigious and therefore harder to get into than UM.

You pretty much missed the point, but no surprise there given your sophomoric attitude. The point is that Michigan has more credence in metro DC, not that it’s a better school. For many, a choice of school is about the value of the alumni network and the size and loyalty of Michigan’s network is an advantage over Duke, plain and simple. Again, in case this is too subtle a post for someone of your capacity, it is not intended to say one school is objectively better than the other.

Instagram posts - generated by GDS students themselves - they post their senior class picture and college - it’s pretty tacky, but informative.

Is it true that 40 kids are headed to the Ivys?

Would this be so remarkable at GDS?

At the least, Duke definitely beats Michigan in douchebag quotient. I remember the high percentage of mid Atlantic students who fancied themselves as southerners when they went there, often with the associated prejudices.

One thing that’s for sure. More than any other school, Duke brings out the haters. Lol.

Duke is all NJ/ NY now. Nothing southern about it.

Always preferred the Southern preppy / lax bro vibe.

Vanderbilt is the new Duke.

Duke is now full of Yankees and may as well be in joisey. Trenton would work.

Princeton is near Trenton, but doesn’t seem very joisy.

You are pretty much clueless. In professional hiring offices throughout DC, and law schools, medical schools, etc..., the Duke alum gets hired/accepted before the Michigan alum all else being equal. That Michigan alumni network you are so into is all fun and great but again, doesn’t make a difference when someone wants to hire or admit the best candidate. Get your head out of your blue and maize a$$.

More of the short hills types.

Sorry, but when I hear Duke and Michigan, I just assume the kid didn't get into his or her top four or five choices. I think safety school for kids applying to Ivys and other top schools.
