I would choose UM over Duke.

+1. Michigan to Duke is a downgrade

I'm the poster who gave the Michigan-->Duke example.

I would probably stick with Michigan too (my kids are in middle school so we're not there yet). However, Duke is heck of a lot harder to get into than Michigan. I know at least a dozen DC kids from public and private who were accepted to Michigan. They range from
steller (straight As, national merit finalists, etc) to strong (A/B students).

I only know of one accepted to Duke (the Michigan kid I mentioned). He/she's a top student, both parents are active Duke alumni and it took a pandemic to get the kid off the waitlist and into Duke from DC.

Uh, that’s probably because of where we are? More kids in mid Atlantic would typically apply to Duke then a school in the Midwest.

Would you consider Duke to be on par with Ivies? I certainly would not. But then again i don't really consider Penn and Cornell to be Ivies. Indeed.

This is such a JACKASS post. Who cares which schools you consider to be Ivy? Indeed!

+1. What an utter imbecile.

My sophomore DC showed me some of the posts and, while I know this will generate a whole lot of ire here, I’ll admit I was impressed by GDS’ placements. The quantity, caliber, and range was notable. Burke and St. Andrew’s also had much stronger placement than I recall from prior years. The placement landscape is clearly changing.

This is a complete troll post. GDS has not posted college placements on Twitter or Facebook or anywhere else. While students will post their destinations on their own social media, the school actively discourages it. Every student is different and where they go to college is not a very good measure of the education provided by their high school. My child's reach may be your child's safety. Your child may prioritize playing on a D3 lacrosse team and mine might dream of landing on an aircraft carrier. And just because 40 students in the senior class got into the Ivies doesn't boost your 8th grader's chances.

Whether it is a school sanctioned post or student generated doesn’t really matter - there is an insta post that lists the college selections of the entire GDS class of 2020. It is a noteworthy list, both because of the multiple admissions at many of the top colleges (to be expected from GDS as that is their bread, butter, and brand) and because of the wide range of other schools - far more mediocre schools than you might otherwise think.

.

We should acknowledge that sending one-third if the senior class to the Ivys, certainly if it were any other school, would be considered pretty amazing.

That is a remarkable statistic, but GDS seems to take it in stride

GDS does have excellent placement, as do its peer institutions. These same top probates also send kids to more main stream colleges. Some of college placement relates to student performance and school reputation but more of it is related to existing family associations. Graduates of elite colleges and universities are more likely to send their children to the top privates. This has been demonstrated again and again.

I'm a GDS parent. My kids are younger admittedly- I'm not sure if all the bragging is from trolls? I don't see a matriculation list anywhere on the GDS website. I'd be happy if it was true of course. Any links to an actual list?

Instagram posts - generated by GDS students themselves - they post their senior class picture and college - it’s pretty tacky, but informative.

Is it true that 40 kids are headed to the Ivys?

My kids average public hs did the exact same thing. I don’t think it’s uncommon this year

Duke is hands down better than Michigan. Its not even a contest. PP, you all are deluisional:

In just one example, and there are many, in the 2020 edition of Best Colleges and Universities, Duke University is ranked #10 among National Universities, ahead of three Ivies. Univ Michiganis ranked much further down at #25 in National Universities, tied with Carnegie Melon.
https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities

Additionally, Duke's acceptance rate is 9.86% whereas Univ. of Michigan's is 26.5%.
Duke's average SAT for accepted students is almost 100 points higher than Michigans (1510 v. 1420)

There is just no way anyone can plausibly claim Michigan is more prestigious or the better school than Duke.

Michigan takes in-state students that come from more diverse backgrounds and thus lower average standardized test scores. OOS Michigan is more akin to Duke in terms of those numbers.

This isn’t about rankings. Folks who are Michigan through and through - and there are a whole lot of them - don’t even know Duke exists. Just walk around UNWDC. There’s a Michigan flag and “Go Blue” magnet on almost every block. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Duke signs anywhere...doesn’t mean it’s not a great school, it just doesn’t have the same following.

With all due to GDS, the universally class of 2020 will have the strongest college placements; to the extent that this year should warrant an asterisk. There has been unprecedented number of deferrals for their incoming Freshman class, and therefore an unprecedented dip into waitlists. The sad truth is that it will be VERY hard for universities to fairly and thoroughly evaluate the HS class of 2021 due to lack of sports, historically valid SATs, historically valid APs, extracurriculars and other leadership opportunites. Therefore, universties have welcomed incoming freshman to defer a year and are going to their waitlist to offer a place for students who met their thorough evaluations. Point in case a good friend of my daughters just got into Georgetown off the waitlist. She was going to attend Babson. Another friend's son who was going to attend BC, just got in off the waitlist for Harvard.

The aftermath will show that the class of 2021 will face unprecedented challenges for university admission and not nearly as impressive results. Universities will have already filled many freshman spots via deferral, which will make the odds much harder to get into university. This is a fact.

There’s not much about Gonzaga on here - how are their placements?

As someone who actually works in college placement I can confirm this is a myth. Deposits for the class of 2024 are stronger than anticipated and all signs are that yield will be as well. WL movement is not stronger than before. It is true that evaluations for the HS class of 2021 will be less than traditional but there is no sense their opportunities will be limited by unusual numbers deferring from the class of 2020. Of course, we will k ow more with the fall meld.

This is probably the stupidest post trying to prove a school is great.... ever. Just Moronic. By every measure that is actually relevant, Duke is a superior school. You can have your Michigan flags and magnets. I’ll pick the Duke alum every time.
