It takes a ton of communication, emotional honesty, self awareness, self assessment, and vulnerability. Most of us aren’t equipped to do this well or put in the work. It’s something that’s easier to think about (and judge), than practice.

Not poly either, but I have a good friend who has been married for about 15 years and she and her husband have opened up the marriage a few times. They always had iron-clad rules about who and how and where they saw other people. If one person was on a dating site, they disclosed they were married and already had a primary partner. If sex with others was going to happen, it was not spontaneous and was disclosed. If one person became uncomfortable, the secondary relationship was discontinued and/or the marriage closed back up. They are still happily married (marriage currently closed).
