What a way to announce to the world you don't read. Good thing it's an anonymous website...
I had to Google them too.
How many people here really read his books? Whenever there is a thread of book recommendations, no one ever recommends his books.
Are you kidding me? His books are insanely popular. Since you do not read, let’s talk tv and movies. Have you seen the movie Coraline? How about the show American Gods? Hundreds of thousands of people read his books worldwide.
I embarrassed for you.
Np...Plenty of books are insanely popular. This doesn’t mean they appeal to everyone. Didn’t know he did Coraline (I’ve seen it and thought it was a cute kids movie, would never read the book) or American Gods (wasn’t for me). Basically his work doesn’t appeal to me. Twilight was insanely popular, should I read that crap too?
Turn your nose back down and realize not everyone has your taste or interest. I’m not even going to address your last sentence. I’ll just take it as a joke.
You are making a different argument than the one you're responding. No not everyone will like or read his books. But to act like he is not a pretty famous author just because you didn't know his books is dumb. He is a very successful and well known author, but not known by every human in America.
If you don’t like or read his books how would you know who he is, duh. He is famous to people interested in his work. To act like he is pretty famous amongst the masses is dumb (as evidenced by plenty of posters here asking who he is). Now if you want to say his work is decently famous then fine. But Stephen King level fame. Nope. Get over yourself.
Did I write that he was Stephen King famous? Did anyone? No. Stephen King is arguably the most famous author alive. Maybe Rowling beats him. I said he was 'pretty famous'. I would say that people like John Grisham, Stephen King, JK Rowling, Michael Crighton, Danielle Steel etc would be very famous. Household name famous. But there are plenty of authors that are very well known and famous who may not be known by every person. I would put Neil Gaiman on the level of people like Diana Gabaldon, Stephanie Meyer (since you invoked her), Jonathan Franzen, Lianne Moriarty, and Margaret Atwood. Authors who are well known and who have seen some of their novels translated into major television/movie projects.
I'm not sure what distinction there is between saying his work is famous vs he is famous. I agree, you are more likely to have head of The Golden Compass books than who Phillip Pullman is. But Neil Gaiman has had multiple successful crossover works and TBH it does make you look kind of not really well read to have never heard of him. I've only read American Gods and his style isn't really my thing, but I'm aware of him and his contributions (American Gods BTW is NOT a children's novel, not by a long shot).
He is a famous and well known author, and authors are generally less known than their work, which is why only a very few become personalities in and of themselves (ie Stephen King). Why is it important to you to declare him not famous?
