Please tell more!

I would describe her as cold and performative. She was very, very interested in “making art” in a public way. Much less so in connecting with other people.

+1000 phony, manipulative and opportunistic to the core. "Artist" -- barf. I'd say I'm surprised he ever fell for her schtick, but I'm not.

Anonymous wrote:The most horrifying Amanda Palmer story I've read was about how she staged her suicide and then recorder her then-boyfriend when he found her "body."

She then used that recording on a record many years later.

The boyfriend killed himself 6 months after the incident.

Link?

I mean she does come across as major borderline personality disorder. she gives artists a bad name.

I had forgotten until just now (reading his Wikipedia entry) that they were married at Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman's house, which just feels so appropriate.

Oh man what an amazing detail. Perfect.

Borderline personalities are not LESS borderline with their children

I only heard of Amanda Palmer once I started following NG on Facebook. She always seemed like a hot mess and the linked articles and especially the Guardian beef doesn't do anything to dispel that. Some people aren't cut out to be married for life, and maybe he is the same way.

I think Neil Gaiman is kind of Roald Dahl famous. Do those who say they have never heard of Gaiman know who Roald Dahl is? They would probably know some of Dahl’s work.

Pls fill me in on Amanda Palmer. I know and love NG. Were her songs played on popular alternative rock stations like DC101? I’m really old.

Open marriages do not last forever, especially when you set up home and have babies - its not compatible

I absolutely know who he is but I've never heard of her. A lot of people are saying she's batsh*t. What has she done that's crazy?
Anonymous
Ok, maybe you are not uneducated but just ignorant, if that makes you feel better.

I saw Amanda Palmer at 9:30 Club years ago. Definitely memorable. And she is definitely bonkers.

I love so much that they got married at Chabon and Ayelet's house. Because--of course, they did. They're just as cuckoo wit the whole "I love my husband more than my kids and let me just put that all out there" nonsense.

She faked her death for her boyfriend to find her. He killed himself soon thereafter.

Fan of Gaiman, Sandman, and Dresden Dolls here. None of these things are everyone's cup of tea, and that's okay. I'm terribly sad to hear this.

What a way to announce to the world you don't read. Good thing it's an anonymous website...

I had to Google them too.

How many people here really read his books? Whenever there is a thread of book recommendations, no one ever recommends his books.

Are you kidding me? His books are insanely popular. Since you do not read, let’s talk tv and movies. Have you seen the movie Coraline? How about the show American Gods? Hundreds of thousands of people read his books worldwide.

I embarrassed for you.

Np...Plenty of books are insanely popular. This doesn’t mean they appeal to everyone. Didn’t know he did Coraline (I’ve seen it and thought it was a cute kids movie, would never read the book) or American Gods (wasn’t for me). Basically his work doesn’t appeal to me. Twilight was insanely popular, should I read that crap too?

Turn your nose back down and realize not everyone has your taste or interest. I’m not even going to address your last sentence. I’ll just take it as a joke.

You are making a different argument than the one you're responding. No not everyone will like or read his books. But to act like he is not a pretty famous author just because you didn't know his books is dumb. He is a very successful and well known author, but not known by every human in America.

If you don’t like or read his books how would you know who he is, duh. He is famous to people interested in his work. To act like he is pretty famous amongst the masses is dumb (as evidenced by plenty of posters here asking who he is). Now if you want to say his work is decently famous then fine. But Stephen King level fame. Nope. Get over yourself.

Did I write that he was Stephen King famous? Did anyone? No. Stephen King is arguably the most famous author alive. Maybe Rowling beats him. I said he was 'pretty famous'. I would say that people like John Grisham, Stephen King, JK Rowling, Michael Crighton, Danielle Steel etc would be very famous. Household name famous. But there are plenty of authors that are very well known and famous who may not be known by every person. I would put Neil Gaiman on the level of people like Diana Gabaldon, Stephanie Meyer (since you invoked her), Jonathan Franzen, Lianne Moriarty, and Margaret Atwood. Authors who are well known and who have seen some of their novels translated into major television/movie projects.

I'm not sure what distinction there is between saying his work is famous vs he is famous. I agree, you are more likely to have head of The Golden Compass books than who Phillip Pullman is. But Neil Gaiman has had multiple successful crossover works and TBH it does make you look kind of not really well read to have never heard of him. I've only read American Gods and his style isn't really my thing, but I'm aware of him and his contributions (American Gods BTW is NOT a children's novel, not by a long shot).

He is a famous and well known author, and authors are generally less known than their work, which is why only a very few become personalities in and of themselves (ie Stephen King). Why is it important to you to declare him not famous?

I guess the same reason why it is important for you, and your ilk, to declare him “pretty famous” and well known. Then continue to yell that anyone who doesn’t know him is uneducated. Seems like he is on a pretty high pedestal to you. But continue to go off.

DP. It’s because you, PP, and your ilk came on this thread proudly professing that you didn’t know who the hell these people are like we should care what you think. I don’t click on threads where I don’t know or care who the people are —Jay Cutler and Kristin Cavallari, thread, for example. I would never go on that thread and say, who the hell are these people?

Like how you ignore threads you aren’t interested in, ignore post with that same effort. Simple.

I guess you always have to right? Pathetic.

You've called everyone names and ruined the thread are you happy now?
