Pay-to-Play Sport at Private HS employing club coach - what's normal?

St. Johns wants to be IMG. Problem is IMG is not a catholic school. It’s an unapologetic sports factory. You can’t maintain your catholic identity and be what they’re trying to be. Soccer and baseball are two examples of where they’re not treating their student athletes in a very Christian manner. The AD can be forgiven because he’s really an Under Armour guy. But the administration and Board of Trustees have no excuse. They’re selling the school’s soul.

I disagree. If St. John’s wanted to be IMG, they’d have a better coach. They lost that game today behind poor coaching. They have the talent, just poor management.

How much of an issue is this at your regular neighborhood public high school?

Similar issue at Deal re basketball and baseball.

Although at Deal the problem is exacerbated by having enough kids to field three or four teams, but only being allowed to compete one (at least that was the case when my kids were there).

Don’t know if OP was referring to SJC and soccer, but OP describes what is occurring there. It is not a secret within the coach’s club. He has no qualms about saying ‘his’ (club) players will make the school team first and making commitments long before tryouts. He also tells his club families that having to coach the school team is not what he wants to do because it requires him to coach players that aren’t with his club, but he does it to get access to the school’s facilities and families for his business. He is a difficult person to put it mildly and it will be interesting to see how much the administration will tolerate. I suppose as long as the team is successful, the school will continue to look the other way.

It's like a mafia shakedown - "Great player you got there, would be a shame if anything happened to his spot on the team."

Maybe but it looks like SJC bit off more than it can chew this season. 3 losses in a row and likely will lose to # 1 ranked Mater Dei. The whole thing is out of whack - a coach from upstate NY, players from around the country ( though I wish them the best). Instead of trying to be a national power, SJC should just try to win the WCAC and play one out of town game a season. It’s not just SJC, it’s several of the other privates too, to a similar or lesser degree. This overemphasis on sports leads to the pay for play scenarios being complained about.

SJC should focus on WCAC and stop all this national schedule nonsense.

No, SJ has just as much talent as the teams they lost to. I’ve been watching the games.
The running game is phenomenal. The problem is the passing game. Either the coach is calling the wrong passing plays or it’s the quarterback. I don’t know what the backup QB situation looks like, but I haven’t seen him let any of them get a chance. Either way it’s the coaches fault. Don’t know why they would go get him from out of state.

It can be way worse because the coaches make less. Really depends.

Schools that invite third parties in to operate sports teams have an obligation to ensure those third parties behave in ways that align with the institutions values and in ways that don’t exploit the school, students, applicants, or parents, financially or otherwise.

The teachers earn less in private, but the coaches earn more? Hmm.

The new athletic director came from IMG. St. John’s is changing and maybe you aren’t ready for it.

For the record public school pays coaches more than private.

What makes you assume these coaches aren't in alignment with the institutions' values?
