Why not? The last chancellor got fired for messing around with this. Actually, I'd love a good excuse to get Ferebee fired.

Why?!

Because PP won’t be happy with a chancellor until they’re white.

What if PP is AA?

Could be, but I doubt it.

It’s been a few months and people are already demanding he get fired. What has he done for him to be considered a lap dog? From everything I’ve heard, he sounds very promising.

Oh really? Based on what?

He has the proper skin color of course.

Not sure if the school or central is to blame for the disfunction - probably both. Overcrowded classrooms, paper shortage, teachers have no supplies, athletics is a mess, etc. Wilson needs big time help.

Really good point

I remember an article in December where he stated he would enroll his son in DCPS either by neighborhood school or by lottery.

Do we also expect charter leaders to put their kids in the schools?

By “charter leaders” do you mean people who work at the schools or people who run charter organizations or members of the charter schools board?

Nothing the chancellor has said or done so far has been impressive. He comes across as a big PR machine for DCPS without actually rolling up his sleeves and trying to fix the dysfunction. Nothing major is going to change folks. Just some superficial changes. What I can’t understand is why the mayor doesn’t want schools to improve. Why does she never hire someone with an independent streak? She just wants to run the show and hires people accordingly

If a mayor actually knows something about education and how to manage educators, mayoral control per se isn't a bad alternative to dysfunctional elected school boards.

BUT, we do not have such a mayor. Education has always been one of her policy weak points. Remember Deal for All?

Kaya Henderson left before Bowser could demote her. Whether you like her record or not, Kaya was competition. DC local, well-connected nationally, young and black, and a parent of kids in DCPS.

So who did Bowser replace her with? The young, black, woman endorsed by pretty much everybody under the sun? Nope. Clueless Antwan from across the country. No local network. No fancy friends in high places. No clue about the complexities of education in DC and rampant school choice. Everything he did in Oakland had been tried or already done in DC. That went well. Any chance she could recruit a local, young, black woman with just as much experience and more understanding of DC? Nope. Bowser got Antwan Lite from Indiana. Nice guy, but not a boat rocker and will never outshine Muriel.

But the craziest part of mayoral "control" is the Deputy Mayor for Education controlling OSSE. The white male McKinsey consultant DME may be talented, but his kids don't go to DCPS or charter. I know it's personal family choice, but seriously? Did she even ask about his school choice before hiring him?

I honestly hope Ferrebee works out. But until we have a more transparent and efficient education governance system, it's going to be lottery madness and boundary battles for the foreseeable future.

To add to the above, the deputy mayor clearly backed away from the Wilson debacle and has nothing fresh or new to add. So much for being a McKinsey rockstar. NY Times has been raking McKinsey over the coals for the last few years so I’m not sure there is that much substance there any way.

X1000.

A lot of people that do not like or agree with her policies or controlling ways will not speak up against her as it is socially unacceptable in many DC circles. If you do speak up against her you are shut out of the city policy conversations, jobs and considered part of the gentrification problem or low class among other things.

Oh, I hear it which is why we left our okay IB for a charter that seems a little bit better. It was funny... teachers at our IB telling us they would not keep their kids to the school after K-2nd yet they get mad when you leave...

Wait.

You folks think that the fact we've had 3 black superintendents in a row is because they are the most qualified candidates in the land?
