I’m ready for Mayoral control of the schools to end. Let the school board and City Council have control. Mayors aren’t very good at it.
If a mayor actually knows something about education and how to manage educators, mayoral control per se isn't a bad alternative to dysfunctional elected school boards. BUT, we do not have such a mayor. Education has always been one of her policy weak points. Remember Deal for All? Kaya Henderson left before Bowser could demote her. Whether you like her record or not, Kaya was competition. DC local, well-connected nationally, young and black, and a parent of kids in DCPS. So who did Bowser replace her with? The young, black, woman endorsed by pretty much everybody under the sun? Nope. Clueless Antwan from across the country. No local network. No fancy friends in high places. No clue about the complexities of education in DC and rampant school choice. Everything he did in Oakland had been tried or already done in DC. That went well. Any chance she could recruit a local, young, black woman with just as much experience and more understanding of DC? Nope. Bowser got Antwan Lite from Indiana. Nice guy, but not a boat rocker and will never outshine Muriel. But the craziest part of mayoral "control" is the Deputy Mayor for Education controlling OSSE. The white male McKinsey consultant DME may be talented, but his kids don't go to DCPS or charter. I know it's personal family choice, but seriously? Did she even ask about his school choice before hiring him? I honestly hope Ferrebee works out. But until we have a more transparent and efficient education governance system, it's going to be lottery madness and boundary battles for the foreseeable future.
