Thinking of sending my white child to Banneker

Why would you worry about bullying? Any evidence to support that?

My kid attends a majority minority school with few white kids--have never heard of any race-based bullying. Not sure why it would be any different at a high school like Banneker, filled with smart, studious kids.

NP here. I'm glad your child hasn't been singled out or bullied based on their skin color. Mine has. It has affected her quite a bit. I am not making assumptions about the social scene or potential for this to happen at Banneker but it certainly can happen, even amongst "smart, studious kids." Forgive me for not wanting my child to experience it again.

PP here. I'm sorry for your child's experience--did this happen in the DC area? I haven't heard of white kids getting bullied at any schools around here.

My kid is actually not white, but has a few close white friends. They've all been buddies since PK3. From speaking with their parents over the years, I've never heard of any race-based bullying at our school.

Not saying it couldn't happen, but I would be very, very surprised. I wouldn't automatically assume this is a systemic problem at majority minority schools.

P.S. I attended majority minority schools K-12. Each year, there were at least a couple white kids in my class. I can only thing of a single incident of white kids being targeted, by a jerk kid in 8th grade. That's the only incident I can think of (and it was a school that took all comers, not an application school like Banneker).

It might be a good experience for a white child to experience life in the minority.

I know it’s a magnet school, but Banneker PARCC scores are higher than any HS in Maryland, even the de facto magents (wealthy/white).

If that's true, and I don't think it is, that's because Banneker is 100% magnet, whereas the Maryland HSs which are magnets (Blair) have both magnet-and primarily non-magnet kids.

+1 It's sad that if a black parent posts on DCUM asking about a school that has more than a token number of black children, the parent is told that color doesn't matter. But if a white parent it thinking of sending their kid to a predominantly black school, then everyone on DCUM is sympathetic and understands the concern.

You can't have it both ways and why don't go check the PARCC score before commenting on that?

Really? I have heard only great things about Banneker and have been hugely impressed by the students I've met. However, their SAT average (1109) [https://dcps.dc.gov/publication/dcps-data-set-sat] is lower than the Mont Co average for all schools (1167) https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/press/index.aspx?pagetype=showrelease&id=8231&type=&startYear=&pageNumber=&mode= So the average for magnet schools in Mont Co would be higher.

I know this is a reflection of the background of many Banneker students (e.g., many are first in their families to be college-bound), not the school.

That's what you might think happens, but the opposite is what actually happens when Black parents raise those legitimate concerns.

Why is it having both ways? Maryland has magnets within non-magnet schools while DC has magnet schools segregated. If you want to compare, then look at VA schools that are solely magnets, like Thomas Jefferson.

Oh my god, you just assume that black kids attending a magnet school will bully a white kid?

No the assumption that any kid who is an "only" has a higher likelihood of being bullied. Blac, white, latino, disabled whatever. Did you all not go to high school. I also think black kids at predominately WoTP schools are getting bulled.

Here my $0.02 as the parent of a white child in a predominantly black school (my kid is one of 3 white kids in the entire 3-5 grades). I think white parents worry about their child getting bullied because a minority child in a predominantly white school isn’t treated very nice by the white students. They assume roles would just be reversed, which isn’t the case.

Yeah, my son has played on a couple of sports teams where he was the only white kid. Not just the only white kid on his team or the only white kid on any of the teams at his club (which he was), but also usually the only white kid in the building where the team practiced -- mostly in PG county high schools. It was never an issue in any way shape or form.

Yes it is in the DC area. We didn't exactly broadcast it because it was important to teach our daughter how to handle it. But it was really hard. It involved people she thought were her friends. I know it isn't a systemic issue but I am sure you can understand why I would be hesitant to put her in another environment where she is an only or one of few. I understand why parents of children of color would have the same hesitation if the situation was reversed.

That's what American kids experience any time they move abroad, and indeed it's very beneficial.

Have you tried?

You guys are talking about apples and oranges. Yes, being exposed to a diverse group of people can be an awesome learning experience. And I mean actual diversity, not just genetic diversity. If you want to actually learn something, go live in another country. Its not like being around Black people is some enlightening experience. Banneker might be a good experience, but I can understand people not wanting to send their child to the numerous predominantly black schools filled with underperforming kids. There are numerous other issues that I doubt you want for child exposed to. That's why people choose not to live in those areas.

It was for my DD who was called a racist when she stood up for herself. Just because it never happened to you or yours.....

Because racism goes both ways in this city, so there’s a good chance that a white kid in a school with predominantly AA staff and students will be treated differently because of his race.

No, wtf, no. There is NOT a good chance. If you don't want your white kid to be in predominately black spaces, you should leave DC. I mean, I just did jury duty in DC and I was the only white woman. Grow up! This is the world we live in.
