Thinking of sending my white child to Banneker

This is a crazy thread. I think you need to think about what you’re asking. It’s silly.

Very interesting implied belief that your white child won't be attracted/attractive to black members of the opposite sex. I'm trying hard not to troll...In seriousness, I would (a) reconsider that belief, and then (b) consider how you would react if your child goes to Banneker and is attracted/attractive to black teenagers, and (c) consider how you would react if your child DOESN'T go to Banneker and is attracted to black teenagers.

I'm assuming that OP means that the academic focus means that "coolness" and dating aren't the kids #1 interests.

Yeah, I think she means, she is looking for a geekier crowd.

I think you’re right. But what bothers me is that she prefaced it by saying her kid is white. Her question was not unique to white kids. Why even mention race unless you had a concern about fitting in (which would be appropriate question to ask). AA families care about whether their kids are not/crazy too.

Tired of white parents acting like they are taking some huge risk/making some huge sacrifice by sending their kids to a school that’s not predominantly white.

- a white parent

In a lot of cities you are taking a risk. Most of these schools are filled with poor performing students, which is reason enough to go elsewhere.

That has nothing to do with Banneker.

That's because Banneker is an anomaly with 70% girls.

There are so many girls because they kick out the boys along the way.

Look up the numbers -- not pretty.

My son’s cohort didn’t want to apply to Banneker due to lack of sports.

Where do you find numbers on the male/female breakdown for schools? I do not see it on the school profile but maybe I am missing it.

OP, this thread is definitely going off the rails but yes Banneker is much more of a geekier environment than most high schools.

Why are you so privileged that you think you can stick your nose in if you don’t actually have a child at the school? WGAF that you’re a white parent?

I'm going to read differently into OP's post. Perhaps they meant that Banneker is a "nerdy" heads-down kind of school and therefore coolness and posturing may be less prominent? I really, really hope that's what they meant and not what you suggest.

Even in that case I think it's a stretch; this is high school.

This is what I meant. I think of Banneker kids as being hardworking intellectuals.

I'm the PP who thought it was about interracial attraction. If you're correct -- which I hope and think you are now -- wow, I really missed that...

I took it the same way, pp. The fact of the matter is proximity is all that is needed to facilitate teenage relationships, both romantic and platonic. When I was a teenager, if I went to a mostly Martian school, I would've dated Martians.

Banneker is definitely on my list for my geeky (white) DS who does not like sports and loves doing homework! Maybe it will be easier for him to find a girlfriend there too

+1 It's the best high school in DC. Basic proficiency scores are much higher than for Wilson.

Ha ha ha. Send my son because his odds are good. Oh man that’s kind of devious. Or awesome. Not sure.

I'd focus on whether the course offerings are a match for your child . Banneker offers both IB and AP. There are a lot of choices for a kid who likes history and social science. On the other hand, for math, they offer AP Calc AB, and the lowest math IB level allowed. There are few offerings for kids interested in languages.

Interesting. I always thought it was more of a STEM school... no?

Any chance Banneker suffers from the same issues that faced Ballou?

Lol. You should ask that question about Wilson instead, not Banneker.

How do they report 100% graduation rate when so many boys drop out?
