Agree with all the posters suggesting OP give her DD a more formal official name and use Molly for the nickname. I have a very 1970s name that is often a nickname. I have often wished my parents had just gone ahead and given me the more formal version.

If you like Molly and don't want to use Mary, then what about Margaret. Or Marian. Or Marianne. Then call her Molly. She can decide as an adult whether she wants to use it as her name in a work environment or go with the more formal. Don't make that choice for her.

+1

Middle name: Elizabeth.

Mary Elizabeth. Classic, strong, beautiful.

NN Molly.

LOVE.

My great grandma was named Molly. Born in Russia but that was her proper name. After she died, my cousin was named Molly after her. Also proper name. We also have a grandpa Jack, proper name, though I read on here that it’s not one. In some places and/or religions, it is. And it’s OK.

Also, already have a Mary in the family so trying to avoid exactly repeating that (I also just don't like it as much as Molly). I also don't consider it a 'dog name' even though of course some people do name dogs that. To me a 'dog name' is Spot, Fido, etc. I have pets with people names, so I guess I don't mind flexing either way on that issue! I've considered the drug terminology issue, but I don't consider it a dealbreaker.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

How long is your last name?

With a short last name, I like a longer middle name with Molly (e.g. Alexandra, Susannah, Victoria, Josephine, Elizabeth). With a long last name, I like something shorter (e.g. Claire, Elise, Frances).

Margalo -- have loved ever since learning of it in Stuart Little

Or any "M" name w Olivia (or other O name), to shorten to Molly

I grew up w a similar-style nickname of a more formal name, and then through school (over time) ended up being regularly addressed by more formal name. My husband, upon hearing my family's nickname for me, grew to using that/original nickname for me too, so the nickname is now standard among his close friends and family (and continues as it always has w my family), and professionally my more formal name stands... would not want to be called by my nickname at work, glad to have two versions of same name; equally glad my family and husband use my nickname all of their own accord...

I can't stand it when people give their children nicknames for their real names. No matter how much you protest, in MY mind, it screams, "Not educated."

Why don't you just name your child Spanky, Buckwheat, Stymie, Porky, Froggy, or Alfalfa? Those are nicknames.
