Gonzaga Kairos Vandalism

I am under the impression that KAIROS is a special opportunity for students and it is a shame that these boys didn't get that.

Insofar as all of the generalizations are concerned, we struggled to pay the tuition at GZ. My son did have discipline issues at GZ and even though we were seriously in arrears with tuition, the school worked with our family to impose an appropriate punishment on him while at the same time preserving his ability to continue as a student at the school.

Although what these kids did is outrageous, based upon my experience, GZ is mostly student-focused when dealing with discipline issues, and I have faith that the punishments handed down will be after carefully weighing the need to punish against its commitment to the student.

GZ code for we don't expel because it could ruin their future and while it's okay for white males to ruin other people's future it's not okay to ruin theirs.

This sounds like drugs or alcohol were involved

When it's white kids, there's always a reason, ie "drugs, alcohol"
When it's black or brown kids, it's because they're black or brown kids.

Funny, I haven't seen anything posted about the race of those involved.

I like your spirit. Let’s pretend no white kids were involved for as long as possible in a school 80% white.

I never said no white kids were involved. But it could very well be a mix. The bigger issue is neither you nor I know, so speculating is useless.

Let's see if they are charged as adults they are black if they get off with no charges, white.

I don't think charges were filed. Everything's being handled outside of law enforcement (I'm assuming a generous cash payment). My guess is right now Gonzaga is more pissed about the fact that someone leaked this info to the Washington Post rather than the crimes its students performed during a school event. Kids will get a great lesson in damage control and coverup at an early age.

How can there possibly be no charges? Even if the property owner wants to cover it up, if the kids dumped a refrigerator into the river, isn’t that a public crime? To say nothing of stewardship of god’s creation, of course.

My son graduated from GZ recently and like the poster above, we struggled to pay the tuition and Kairos was an amazing, life- changing event for him to this day.

And as far as expulsions go and the poster directly above, every year he was at the school students were expelled for participating in illegal acts/behavior, including seniors within only a few months of graduating.

No charges because the private property owners chose not to press charges. It’s criminal/civil law 101. Not a conspiracy.

Based on what I hear and see from GZ students on the Red Line, I'm not exactly shocked by all of this.

Dozens of students from Washington’s prestigious Gonzaga College High School, on a spiritual retreat in southern Maryland, ransacked a cabin and an unoccupied home, shattering windows and cabinets, punching holes in walls, throwing a toilet into a yard and destroying property throughout both dwellings, according to several Gonzaga employees who were told of the incidents at a staff meeting at the school.

A number of the students pulled a refrigerator from the cabin and pushed it over a cliff into the Potomac River, which runs along the property, the employees said.

The acts took place during afternoon breaks at the retreat on two consecutive days, Jan. 30 and 31. Approximately 40 to 50 students, mostly juniors but some seniors, took part in the vandalism, according to the employees, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they feared retribution.

What kind of retreat was this? Where the hell were the chaperones? Not only should kids be expelled, but staff should be fired. 40-50 kids? That’s not a few bad apples. That’s a school culture gone to hell.

Wow I know some Gonzaga families and I can’t imagine their kids doing anything like this. Who are the kids and where are they from that did this? The boys I know are eally polite and somewhat timid and no we don’t go to the school.

Clearly you do not know the school very well.

Oh dear, but what are they like when adults are not around?

Where are they from? Some live in that subdivision called Lord of the Flies in northern VA while others reside in homes along Entitled & Pathetic Highway, just north of Bethesda. A few live in the Kavanaugh Bros neighborhood in NW.

Kudos to the Gonzaga employees who were brave enough to speak to the Post.

Seriously, sounds perilously close to “Lord if the Flies” madness. Why do parents put their boys in situations like this?

+ 1. If they kept quiet I bet the school would have tried to sweep it under the rug. Why do these kids have SO much anger and rage inside to do such a thing during a religious retreat.

Because it's not entirely their fault, they didn't know people actually lived in such crappy homes.

Wait, because they thought it would be OK if it were abandoned property? Its Ok to throw a refrigerator in the Potomac as long as no one claims it (not that they asked)?

I mean, imagine if they had checked first. "Excuse me please, Mr. Chaperone, is that home over there abandoned? Because if it is, we were planing to have a rager and destroy it for $h!ts and giggles. Would that be alright? Bro, it'll be epic."

Abandoned property? That excuse is beyond pathetic. Someone lives there. That meant there were pictures on the walls where they punched holes, plates in those cabinets they tore off walls and toothbrushes in that bathroom where they ripped out a toilet. Not only did they do this in one afternoon, the went back the next day. Who does that???
