My kid was flagged for weak verbal score in CoGat (low 90s) and was high in the other two categories (99%).
Got into CAP.

So, definitely more than just test scores are considered.

What do you mean that they were flagged?

Also, shouldn't verbal skills be paramount for success in CAP? (i'm a current CAP parent, not parent of applicant)

I get he/she meant the "V-" in the score.

And just as you said, verbal skills should be paramount for CAP, so you get her/his point: "definitely more than just test scores are considered. "

Right - the child in question may not test well but shows excellent oral abilities that teachers document in recommendations. The child may have also won various writing, acting, and/or film competitions - also traits that would be looked for by CAP.

V- means weak verbal compared to quantitative and nonverbal. DC got straight 99s on CogAT but had V- because DC was nearly 100% correct on quantitative and nonverbal, but DC only got 90% correct on verbal. So, a V- doesn't mean that the child has weak verbal, just that quantitative and nonverbal are stronger than verbal.

My son was accepted by RMIB and all three programs in Poolsville as well.

V 54/64 (99% both age and grade)
Q 49/52 (99% both age and grade)
NV 50/60 (99% both age and grade)
Composite age: 99%
Composite grade: 99%

The CAP application doesn’t ask for any of that. My kid won awards in middle school for a couple of documentaries and there was no where to include on application.

CogAT Global
V 51/64 (98%)
Q 50/52 (99%)
NV 53/60 (99%)
We got a CogAT flag for the relatively weak verbal score ...

Accepted to all three at PVHS:
Median raw (percentile)

Global Ecology
V 47 (73%)
Q 51 (89%)
NV 55 (98%)

Humanities
V 46 (74%)
Q 52 (91%)
NV 44.5 (98%)

SMCS
V 49 (76%)
Q 50 (90%)
NV 48 (98%)

(Note - Verbal median is higher for SMCS than Humanities, and Quantitative median is higher for Humanities than SMCS. Go figure ...)

RMIB - Waitpool
V 53 (70%)
Q 47 (88%)
NV 45 (97%)

Clearly, the relatively weak verbal score made the difference here between admit and wait pool for RMIB.

Am I right in reading that Poolsville GE non verbal median (55) was higher that SMCS (48)for last year?

That could be because GE pulls from the whole county while SMCS pulls from fewer schools?

Yes, you are reading that correctly. Because kids are more than their standardized testing scores.

Many top SMCS kids also apply for GE as a safeguard. My kid got into the three houses in PHS as well as RMIB, got into all four. While he is getting straight As in SMCS etc., he does not consider himself among the top Math kids because there are some true Math geniuses in SMCS.

Another proof MCPS magnet process (at least for IB, Blair and PHS) has changed. The results didn’t come until early Feb before.

How is this proof? Do you realize no one who applied this year has their results? This is an old thread.
