Why so much UVA jealousy?

I'll tell you who is jealous of Virginians, and that is we Californians. UVA lets in about 75% Virginians. The in-state tuition is a bargain. Meanwhile, out of state tuition is in the 45K range, and your kid cannot establish VA residency unless a parent lives there.

In CA, the University of California system (UCs, such as UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Berkeley etc) lets in some ridiculously low % of Californians, because they are looking for out-of-state or out-of-country students to subsidize the California kids. They also have a deal with the CA public HSs to let in their top 10% of kids. But these publics don't hold a candle to what I've seen with the Arlington HS system. So many families go private. Then the private kids are SOL with respect to getting into their state schools bc those few spots are taken by public school kids.

So...I don't know why any Virginian would scoff at the UVA deal. Great school, great price.

Why are we leaving out the W&M deal?

Two very different schools. Kids st both, years ago. Not too long ago, they were nearly at parity in terms of academic quality of undergrads, but UVA just became the more popular and somewhat stronger school. W&M is a great school but it has limited appeal now, given its size and reputation for un-fun. I honestly think that it might become an all-women’s state college soon. Its number of applications stays flat, it’s yield rate is embarrassingly low, and I think it has given up in appealing to men.

There will soon no longer be all-women's or all men's schools, since academia has determined that gender doesn't exist. In fact, most schools are converting their single sex dorms to coed.

Well, maybe de facto. They brought in as president an academic from Smith and the marketing just seems very women-focused. Maybe that’s just their core constituency.

That's cute. So maybe biological women will soon become known as "de facto" women as opposed to the trans-women.

Nope. What I think will happen is that the ratio will go out of whack. Go tilt at other windmills.

Ratios are already "out of whack" at most colleges. Overall in the U.S. at universities it is 44% male and 56% female. Virginia schools are no exception with VMI and VT being the outliers on the male side.

CEW report is here: https://cew.georgetown.edu/cew-reports/college-rankings/#interactive

ROI is here: https://www.payscale.com/college-roi The ROI is done at full (list) cost rather than net cost.

Princeton in particular is generous with grants that offset full cost giving grants for half tuition up to incomes of $250K. https://admission.princeton.edu/cost-aid/how-princetons-aid-program-works There is that issue of the 5.5% acceptance rate, though.

I live in NOVA and I've never seen anyone in Michigan gear. And who the hell wants to go to school in the upper mid west?

Weird. It’s usually mixed in with the Ivy crowd so maybe that’s why you haven’t seen it.

Michigan has nothing in common with Ivy League schools. There are no Walmart Harvard fans.

It has more in common than UVA does.

Walmart? Charlottesville is more podunk than Ann Arbor.

Walmart Wolverines.

UVA was a fairly easy in in the late 80s. Lots more competition now, suckers!

It is a first choice school for highly intelligent, accomplished, and candidly beautiful, athletic, and extraordinarily well rounded high school graduates from all over the country. And if you go there from in state, it’s an absolute bargain. So why is everyone so jealous of it? Why aren’t we thrilled to have such an attractive option right at our front door?

Why so many UVA braggarts? Y'all never shut up about UVA, and you come across as defensive and insecure.[/quote]
That’s what it is.

Is there any resource that breaks down 10 yr salaries by college AND major? It seems silly to compare Purdue overall with Purdue engineering. Or UVA overall with McIntire.

It's almost like the kids go in smart and come out dumb/quote]

Our impression of UVA as well

So many TJ kid. So much promise. Young women in STEM ... who do nothing with it. It's like getting accepted to UVA (via TJ) was their goal, their only goal all along.

What does go in smart, come out dumb mean? As in they got some freedom, rushed a sorority/frat, partied too much, and stopped being hyper-ambitious? At least I assume that's what you mean, but maybe not.

You must be joking. I see Michigan stuff everywhere around here. Plus it’s an excellent school.

PP is dumb. There are no Walmart Harvard fans because Harvard athletics sucks. If they had awesome football/basketball, there would be fans from podunk parts of MA who would get some patronizing name from the alums.

UVA acceptance rate (before the days of kids applying to 20 schools) was 34% in 1991. I am not convinced things have changed as much as people believe. One thing that has changed is admission rate now appears to be lowest by far for nursing (as well as yield).

Yes, I have attended some of these presentations. It is amazing the company that UVA keeps. Clearly the school is a lot more prestigious than many DCUM posters are willing to admit.
