Why so much UVA jealousy?

I'll tell you who is jealous of Virginians, and that is we Californians. UVA lets in about 75% Virginians. The in-state tuition is a bargain. Meanwhile, out of state tuition is in the 45K range, and your kid cannot establish VA residency unless a parent lives there.

In CA, the University of California system (UCs, such as UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Berkeley etc) lets in some ridiculously low % of Californians, because they are looking for out-of-state or out-of-country students to subsidize the California kids. They also have a deal with the CA public HSs to let in their top 10% of kids. But these publics don't hold a candle to what I've seen with the Arlington HS system. So many families go private. Then the private kids are SOL with respect to getting into their state schools bc those few spots are taken by public school kids.

So...I don't know why any Virginian would scoff at the UVA deal. Great school, great price.

Why are we leaving out the W&M deal?

Two very different schools. Kids st both, years ago. Not too long ago, they were nearly at parity in terms of academic quality of undergrads, but UVA just became the more popular and somewhat stronger school. W&M is a great school but it has limited appeal now, given its size and reputation for un-fun. I honestly think that it might become an all-women’s state college soon. Its number of applications stays flat, it’s yield rate is embarrassingly low, and I think it has given up in appealing to men.

Well the incoming profile is the same as UVA's and it is high in the rankings, so I think it should still be considered a good deal/desirable option for VA residents. It seems to be a default for top VA students who don't want to pay for out of state, and are turned off by the uber-preppy environment at UVA.

I'm a Virginian and I'm jealous of UNC.

Why?

Not as ridiculously preppy, better sports, more spirit, cooler town.

Dumber school with troubled athletics program in a dumber state.

There will soon no longer be all-women's or all men's schools, since academia has determined that gender doesn't exist. In fact, most schools are converting their single sex dorms to coed.

It's a bargain compared to anywhere else these kids would go.

Well, maybe de facto. They brought in as president an academic from Smith and the marketing just seems very women-focused. Maybe that’s just their core constituency.

It’s no Michigan! There are guys in northern VA who wear Michigan hats so often I swear they have been sewn into their heads.

I live in NOVA and I've never seen anyone in Michigan gear. And who the hell wants to go to school in the upper mid west?

Clearly, very many people.

That's cute. So maybe biological women will soon become known as "de facto" women as opposed to the trans-women.

You know this stuff is all regional right? Outside of about 10 schools, most high ranking schools aren't held in the same regard outside of their region. As a Virginian, I'm gaga over UVA, but I get that people from other states wouldn't be as much. I know that Michigan, UT, UNC, some of the non-Berkley UC's are extremely good schools as well, but I don't hold them in the same regard that people in those states do. Even a lot of the SLACs that get so much love on DCUM are not well known to me, but obviously they carry a lot more cache in the north east. I think the thing to remember is that unless one attends an ivy caliber school, most fantastic schools don't have wide spread recognition outside of the region they are located in.

Weird. It’s usually mixed in with the Ivy crowd so maybe that’s why you haven’t seen it.

Nope. What I think will happen is that the ratio will go out of whack. Go tilt at other windmills.

Michigan has nothing in common with Ivy League schools. There are no Walmart Harvard fans.
