Why so much UVA jealousy?

NP - it's not jealousy or envy; just the sad slow realization that UVA may not be attainable. I didn't grow up here but think UVA is a very good school at a great value. I would be proud if my kid could go there. Just started the college search, checked out Naviance andit's showing 4.4gpa and 1450 SAT for acceptances! I know I'm going to have to listen to my neighbors promote UVA because their kid went there and graduated nearly 10 years ago. Test scores have increased nearly 100 points since then.

That can be the case as well. I was just arguing that the comments about UVA could come from people who are jealous or from those who get a bit miffed with some of the boosters on this site.

It's frustrating because stakes were not this high even 10 years ago. It seems these days if your kid doesn't score at least in the mid-1400s, there are few familiar options. Even Tech is getting difficult and I think since so many are turning there, it will become even more difficult. Furthermore, I saw on their website under strategic diversity that they aim to have 40% of the incoming freshman class of 2022 be underserved or underrepresented minority. On to GMU, JMU or VCU or pay $$$$.

+1000 We are in state but attend private in DC. Annoyed that my kid can get into Wake Forest or Michigan, which cluster around the same ranking as UVA, but will be rejected from UVA. It is a tough pill to swallow when we have been paying taxes here for 25 years. I wish they would make the in state vs out of state ratio similar to UNC or UT Austin. Jealous? No. Frustrated? Yes.

For UT they have that top 7% cutoff for 75% of positions, so they have their own set of frustrations.

I wouldn’t suggest they do the top % system they do in Texas. But wouldn’t a 75/25 or 80/20 ratio be a bit better for Virginia residents?

The Commonwealth won't make up the difference. There was a stretch where someone would propose a change in the law during each legislative session, but the bills would never go through. The finance committee always killed them.

The universities are using out of state students to subsidize operations. If the in-state percentage is increased, the state is not going to be sending additional money to the universities. The state is strapped as it it.
