How bad will Georgetown Pike be during school drop off hours in McLean?

Our local officials don’t care about our kids- that’s been made clear. Those of us in GF would be better off getting rezoned to other schools. More time for the kids and they’d be at the top of the academic pool!

Op here. So are these people cutting through?

We just moved in 2 weeks ago and still trying to figure things out. I was trying to come home from Bethesda the other day, got off my exit and this guy started trying to run me off the road because he was so mad that he thought I cut him off. I was just trying to merge so I could turn to go home.

Now you know why the ramp is closing. Maryland people think their commute is everyone else's problem. It simply is not.

I live in VA and sometimes use Geogetown Pike when the Parkway is backed up. Are you saying I shouldn't be allowed because its an inconvenience to you? Do you think that the road is only for your neighborhood's use? I didn't realize that the road was part of a gated community.

That is not the point. They are trying to disperse the traffic to other neighborhoods - who, "shocker" also do not want the traffic. Once the traffic is more dispersed, they may or may not reopen it. There are powerful people in that neighborhood, which should be fairly obvious - not much of a surprise that measures would be taken, one way or the other - not surprisingly, none of which commuters would like. If Marylanders (yes, it is mostly Marylanders, as you can easily determine, if you watch for yourself) did not block the box, these measures would not have to be taken, but it is a safety concern. There are other factors, but this is one of the main factors - one of the easiest that the commuters themselves es could solve, but they chose not to. All of this has been discussed upthread.

Believe it or not, there are enough who agree with the ramp closing sentiment to make it happen. It is not one person.

Who said it is one person? What a ridiculous straw-man argument.

Most with an opinion on the topic oppose closing the ramp. If it closes, it will be another example of obvious favoritism towards a bunch of rich folks who think they should be immune from the same type of traffic that everyone else deals with it on a daily basis, and it will make traffic worse in every other direction heading out from Tysons. If John Foust has even the faintest of a clue, he will nip this in the bud now.

Or not.

He already has lukewarm support. Bending over to please his rich neighbors would be the final straw.

Why can't they just station a traffic cop at the intersection during peak periods, like MPD does at various intersections in DC?

It sounds like this is being blown out of proportion by people who think they deserve private roads.

So is Route 7. That was widened.

So is Hunter Mill Road, which has a ramp onto the Dulles Toll Road. Does VDOT plan to close it as well? What nonsense.

If drivers block the box enough, why not?

As long as the cars aren’t in your neighborhood, right?
Anonymous
It’s not that the cars are in the neighborhoods. They’re gridlocked in every single neighborhood artery that flows to Georgetown Pike and the beltway. Literally can take over an hour to go less than a quarter mile. I have put my car in park and walked to get my kid from school so that I don’t miss pick up time. It’s a real issue. Not just some people pissed that there are some extra cars flowing through.

Georgetown Pike 3-6pm is really a nightmare. I live off Georgetown Pike and it is the only road for us to get in and out of our neighborhood. It is a daily struggle, so any measures to lighten the traffic is welcomed!!
Anonymous
There is heavy traffic all over NoVa. Why do you not understand that it’s not fair to simply try and offload traffic near your homes to other arteries closer to where other people live? You are asking for the equivalent of a subsidy, and it’s predictable that when rich people ask for relief - whether in the form of segregated schools, tax breaks, or redirecting traffic to other neighborhoods- there will be a backlash.
