How bad will Georgetown Pike be during school drop off hours in McLean?

Anonymous
And you wouldn’t believe the quiet roads in DC before Virginia and Maryland went back to school!! All those drivers still on vacation!! It happens in every part of the DC area!! McLean is not special in this way!!

Think of all the negative impact the Maryland drivers have on McLean. Unreal!!

That post makes no sense

The poster is claiming that, because MCPS closed yesterday for the Jewish holidays, people from Maryland who work in Virginia took the day off, reducing the traffic along Georgetown Pike in the Langley area of McLean. I don’t know if it’s true or not. The traffic on the GW Parkway was lighter this summer when people from Arlington were on vacation, but I don’t think that means we have to close the Spout Run entrance to the Parkway.

MCPS wasn't closed yesterday . It's closed today.

Cooper was under capacity in terms of enrollment. And not sure having buses traverse from this side of Mclean to the other side of McLean for Longfellow was helping our areas transportation woes any. Plus, most of Cooper's kids ride buses anyway.

By under capacity you mean the trailers next to the school are not full of students?

+1
They had to add another mod unit this year because there were so many kids.

Poor snowflakes.

The point - since you missed it - was that Cooper was never under capacity to begin with. And now it's over capacity, just like Longfellow and Kilmer. Happy now?

Your “point” is inaccurate.

You are incorrect. The reason Cooper had a mod in the first place was because the original school structure was overcrowded. And now they've had to add a second mod. So you must be just gleeful over that fact.

I feel bad for those poor kids rushed and hushed in the crowded hallways by a condescending voice in the speaker.

Glad to hear. Maybe if more kids go there and Langley FCPS won’t cannibalize the nearby school districts, as threatened, to fill up your under-enrolled schools.

DP here. We really wanted to buy on the Longfellow/McLean side because I thought the people on the Langley side would be rich snobs. Everyone has been super nice and actually down to earth.

Not sure why the Langley pyramid keeps getting attacked for no reason.

Haters gotta hate. It's what they do.

As long as they get what they want, they don’t care if other schools are inconvenienced, other neighborhoods are overrun with traffic, and the needs of poorer families go unmet.

You could say this about anyone. Parents tend to put their own kids' needs first. That's just how it goes. And no, I don't live in Langley. Attacks just get tiresome, no matter who they're aimed at.

Yes, parents do tend their own kids’ needs first. The difference is that Langley has so many people who don’t think anyone else matters at all.

B.S. You just have an enormous chip on your shoulder. All of your negative comments about Langley are only making it clear what kind of person you are.

The difference is that our school board member Jane Strauss has made it clear that Langley is her piggy bank for the rest of the school district and our needs be damned.

New Langley family here. I don’t even know who Jane Strauss is.

She is the School Board member for the Dranesville District, which includes Langley.

She kept Langley out of boundary studies when Langley parents didn’t want to be redistricted to South Lakes, and made sure Langley is getting an $80 million renovation that expands its capacity, even though other schools built around the same time in the mid-60s are still waiting to be renovated. But she also favors smaller class sizes at schools that have more poor kids (unlike Langley, which has virtually none).

As a result, most voters in the Langley area have tried unsuccessfully to replace her on the School Board. These are the same people who imply Langley is paying the bill for the rest of the county and that Strauss is treating them as her “piggy bank.” Most of the main advocates for closing down the Route 123 exit ramp to the Beltway come from their ranks.

Oink, oink, indeed.

Regarding Langley's renovation, it's just a complete lie to say it was "put ahead" of other schools. Langley was built in 1965 and has *never* had a renovation; we've waited patiently for our turn as other schools were renovated first. Most of the other schools built during that time have all been renovated already (McLean, Madison, South Lakes, Marshall, etc.). Oakton and Herndon are currently in the renovation process. So quit your griping about that. Langley has every right to be renovated, along with all the other schools built in the '60's. Move on and find something else to whine about.

Tell that to parents at Falls Church HS, built around the same time as Langley and still waiting for its renovation to start.

Your post is full of misinformation. McLean and Madison were built in the 50s, not mid-60s, and Langley already was partially renovated once before in 1990. South Lakes wasn’t built until the late 70s and has never had a renovation comparable to the current Langley renovation.

Anyway, Strauss made sure Langley was getting renovated and that it would also be expanded, even though its enrollment in recent years has been down from the peak. Not every school can say that. Even so, most people of the Langley precincts have voted against her because she cares as much about her Title I schools in Herndon as she does about Langley.

That rubs many of the Langley residents the wrong way, because they’ve convinced themselves that everyone else is riding on their shoulders (see the “piggy bank” reference and other posts on this thread) and they should be able to dictate policy, whether it’s FCPS spending or closing down the Georgetown Pike ramp.

Oink, oink.

Wow, speaking of misinformation. Once again, Langley is undergoing its first renovation. They had to put an addition on in 1990 because of over crowding, and also had a parking lot full of trailers for years until the bulk of the renovation finished up this summer. It has never been renovated in any way and was overdue.

South Lakes did indeed have a renovation, though not an extensive one - and is slated for another one, even though it's a newer school than the others. https://www.restonnow.com/2015/10/07/on-the-docket-south-lakes-high-schools-expansion-plans/

Falls Church High School was built in 1967 - compared to Langley, which was built in 1965, two years earlier. If they're going chronologically, obviously Langley would come before Falls Church. If you're a Falls Church parent, I guess you'll just have to wait your turn, like we did. I'm not sure why you feel entitled to skip ahead of Langley - if anything, sounds like you feel entitled to dictate policy. Oink, oink indeed.

No, it's just the usual vocal minority who feels that anyone living in the Langley district must be evil and unworthy. You know, same old shtik.

Wrong, but good luck trying to convince VDOT that’s the case. Most are fed up with your whining.

Funny, because the only whiners I see are those complaining about the Langley community. Not a good look for you.

Not surprising. Whining comes naturally to you, so you don’t notice what’s quite obvious to everyone else.

OMG. Do the two of you do anything other than obsess over the Langley community? No? Didn't think so.
