MIL should be playing zero role in this conversation. |

I posted at 22:54. The RC church lost me as a child when we were told that divorced people die and go to he11. Parent was divorced. Read about Bernard Law and Boston. The Church buried it in the Vatican. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/20/world/europe/cardinal-bernard-law.html "“It wasn’t that he was a pedophile,” said Monsignor Di Ciocco. “He found himself having to manage a difficult situation. It’s not that he himself behaved badly. “In my times, there was a different instruction. If something happened in a family, it was the role of the father of a family to hide it. Now it is all about the media and saying sorry. It was natural that he defended his children, the priests. We can’t criticize what happened then with the mentality of today. It’s not fair.” So people have choices. Support an organization with those beliefs or leave. |
Lutherans believe in consubstantiation, which is basically the same thing as transubstantiation except that it requires no suspension of disbelief. Consubstantiation means that substance of the bread and wine coexists with the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist. |
| Episcopalian or Lutheran. You can find some churches that are more "high church" than others. |

Conservative Catholics wouldn't be considering a change.
This conservative Catholic is leaving Catholicism. I'm going to call my parish tomorrow morning and tell them that my family is leaving the church. I will cease all monetary donations to Catholic organizations including their schools. I stand with Jesus not with an institution that accommodates pedophiles. I align myself with Jesus not homosexual and pedophile priests who prey on children. I will not step foot in a Catholic Church again unless it is a museum. A true follower of Christ will never support or make excuses for the evil that resides within the Catholic Church. I wish we could line these monsters up along the aisles of Catholic churches and stone them to death. Conservative Catholics don't support child abuse! Unfortunately, the priesthood seems to attract mentally unstable men who like to abuse children. As a Conservative Catholic, I don't support child abuse! However, one must understand that abuse happens in ALL churches. The number one person outside of families to commit child abuse is a Protestant youth minister. My friend from college husband's works for a church insurance agency, and he tells me that the Catholic abuse pails in comparision to that in Baptist circles. |
| OP, all YOUR drama, you making this dramatic on a family/personal level, is what will mess up your kids, not one particular religion over another |
+1 about your MIL. Sounds like she is pretty powerful influence over your family. YOU need to be strong. DH needs to be on your side and not guilt-tripped by MIL. I know the type. |
OP's kids will see him/her stand up for what is morally right -- and I don't know how that "can mess up your kids." What a ridiculous thing to say. |
Defenders of the faith are known for saying ridiculous things |

"well, if you think Catholics are bad, wait til to you hear about the Baptists!" It is ALL EVIL. |
"Outside the church there is no salvation. You will not be saved." unspoken: but if you are a good Catholic, receiving sacraments from pedophile priests and/or financially supporting an organization that protects them while not protecting their victims, then when you die, (assuming you are in a state of grace) you will go to heaven and live eternally, with God, Jesus and Mary and all the pedophile priests and people who protected them -- assuming they, too, were in a state of grace when they died. |
Thank you, PP. That is pretty powerful brainwashing. |

Op, I haven’t read many of the responses, but please be aware that any organized religion, medical care, school, or club for that matter will be at risk of pedophilia and cover up. Pedophiles are drawn to professions or roles that allow them access to children. We know about these current atrocities b/c the bishops “secret files” were subpoenaed. Avoiding scandal isn’t just in the Catholic playbook.
My child went to a school where they fired a teacher. Only years later when he was arrested for a different incident did the school notify parents. He had worked with children the entire time. As a lapsed Catholic I completely understand your disgust, but it doesn’t mean that other religions aren’t hiding the same scandals. What needs to happen everywhere is a protocol for investigating possible abuse that doesn’t circumvent the law. These protocols need to be shared internally with staff and externally with families/client/patients. Proper procedure is actually contacting the fbi (or police) if it’s an organization. CPS if it’s a parent or police. Police if it’s an individual. I want to see laws in place for anyone who covers up and protect these monsters regardless if they’re school administrator or bishops. If they had to face consequences, they’d stop. |
