Op, I haven’t read many of the responses, but please be aware that any organized religion, medical care, school, or club for that matter will be at risk of pedophilia and cover up. Pedophiles are drawn to professions or roles that allow them access to children. We know about these current atrocities b/c the bishops “secret files” were subpoenaed. Avoiding scandal isn’t just in the Catholic playbook. My child went to a school where they fired a teacher. Only years later when he was arrested for a different incident did the school notify parents. He had worked with children the entire time. As a lapsed Catholic I completely understand your disgust, but it doesn’t mean that other religions aren’t hiding the same scandals. What needs to happen everywhere is a protocol for investigating possible abuse that doesn’t circumvent the law. These protocols need to be shared internally with staff and externally with families/client/patients. Proper procedure is actually contacting the fbi (or police) if it’s an organization. CPS if it’s a parent or police. Police if it’s an individual. I want to see laws in place for anyone who covers up and protect these monsters regardless if they’re school administrator or bishops. If they had to face consequences, they’d stop.
