1. I think that she got pregnant using donor embryos and Craig's sperm.

2. For those that think that she used frozen eggs, we have seen that it is very precarious to use frozen eggs, as evident from other stories on infertility forum. Eggs do not survive thaw process as well as embryos and it she froze only 12-15 eggs lets say that is not nearly enough. However, I will give her the benefit of doubt.

3. For those that suggested that she used frozen embryos, that is the least likely scenario. She began dating Craig in Dec 2010 when she 40 years and 9 months old. Unless she knew she was going to marry him and have children with him day one, she would't have created and frozen embryos with him then and there. He would have had to agree to that from a day one. At 40+ every month that passes by is a decade in fertility terms, so it's unlikely she froze them at 42 or 43 without a high rate of aneuploidy.

4. Media is doing a huge disservice throwing around titles about celebrities and high profile persons getting pregnant in their late 40s/early 50s without mentioning that this is biologically highly unlikely (although not impossible). In infertility world we know that the most important thing is the age of an egg (age of an egg is same as the age of a woman because women are born with all their eggs). The age of an uterus doesn't matter provided that it is anatomically fine (in majority of women it is) and a women is in general good health. So, it does not matter who carries an embryo technically speaking. It matters who conceives an embryo and in this case it's most likely a donor and Craig.

If you're on the infertility forum you should know the correct terminology. Donor embryos wouldn’t have Craig’s sperm.

It’s totally possible that she froze her eggs in 2008-2009 when she was in her late 30s and her relationship with Darren Aronofsky was ending. I have a friend who froze her eggs at SG around the same time period and around the same age (she was 38). She has a 3yo now.

Yes, I made a mistake there. I meant frozen eggs. Unfortunately, there is no edit function to go back and correct mistakes.

but why would Weisz wait 10 years to use those eggs? she has been with Craig for like 8 years now. it seems unlikely she started thinking about kids 5 months ago.

PP here. I can say my friend waited a few years to use her 38yo frozen eggs and then it took her a few tries. Obviously I have no idea how Rachel Weisz conceived/became pregnant. Maybe it was an oops/surprise. Who knows?

a few years sure but 8 years or so? weisz is 4 years behind your friend. it seems unlikely she would wait 4 years in her late fourties to start trying. it's also unlikely she had dozens and dozens - over a hundred really - eggs.

regardless of fertility lost people in late fourties don't want to wait for years to have a child.

Since they have been together for several years it just might a natural miracle. If they had really wanted to she could have kids via fertility treatments when they first got together.

If it was a natural pregnancy more power to her. I just think these celebrities should publicly announce that they use donor eggs, if they do only because many ordinary women look up to them (unfortunately). This gives women a false impression and hope that they will be fertile in their 40s when the reality is mostly the opposite of that.

Good post!

NP. You seem way to invested in this person's medical information. Infertility is one of the hardest trials one can face, but for goodness sake MYOB. This sort of speculation is not nice at all.

My aunt had a history of recurrent miscarriages and no births. She stopped menstruating at 47 and thought she was going through menaupause. When he stomach started growing she thought she had a tumor and went to see a physician. She was 6 months pregnant. The baby is 20 now. These things happen.

It's either a donor egg or it isn't. At her age, it most likely is. What does confirmation one way or the other matter?

personally I am curious. I am pregnant naturally at 45 which is obviously different from 48 but even at 48 pregnancies do happen.

Same here. Our child is now 7 going on 8. It happens. Boy, were we surprised!

It's none of our business, and no they shouldn't. If there is a 32 year old woman out there actively deciding to not try for a baby because Rachel Weisz got pregnant at 48 then she has no business raising a child.

I appreciate when celebrities are honest about their fertility circumstances, but it really isn’t any of our business.

I actually would not be surprised if this were a natural pregnancy. Do you really think she would have tried for 8 years with treatments...or put off trying, if they wanted kids together?

How do you know they didn't try naturally for the past 8 years and then turned to donor eggs? I have a friend who did this--got married at 40, tried naturally from age 40 to 44, including several "natural cycle" IVF cycles. Started the donor egg process at 45 and finally conceived at 46ish.

The thing is, you just don't know what happened.

Maybe she never thought she wanted another kid and then recently held a newborn and thought, "wow, I really want another kid" and decided to go for it and went straight to donor egg.
Who knows.

I work in a fertility clinic. It makes me a bit squeamish when people recount all the tales of "natural pregnancies at age 48 or 49. Sure, these conceptions happen but they're exceedingly rare. The vast majority of women will have difficulty conceiving at any time past the very early 40s. Many will see a marked decline in
fertility past age 39 or 40. Many will never have success in conceiving a baby. We see SO many women who have no idea that they won't be able to conceive at 41 or 42 or 43 (let alone 45+). They believe that fertility will last until 45+ because this is increasingly how it's portrayed in the media. However, it just doesn't.
And there are thousands upon thousands of donor egg cycles done in the US each year. A large number in places like NYC and California. Most (not all) of these pregnancies are never revealed as donor egg to anyone. We see a ton of women who don't even tell their mothers or sisters. It's a insanely secretive process. Anyway, you
just never know. Celebrities aren't miraculously super fertile. What they have going for them is money and ability to seek care.
