Watch your kids for frostbite

Anonymous
Where I come from kids have to go outside for recess until -20. Never heard of anyone getting frostbite.

I imagine people in Wisconsin have appropriate winter weather gear, right?

There are kids in this area who don't actually have a winter coat...let alone whatever LL Bean/Columbia/Patagonia fancy pants coats you people wear in the hinterlands.

And regardless of the fancy gear, there's no way a baby or toddler is comfortable being rapidly pushed in a baby jogger while his crazy mommy jogs in this weather.

You do know that L.L Bean, Columbia and Patagonia are both easily available in the D.C area right? They don’t refuse to ship to places with mild winters, and even have stores here…

My baby (now 16M) has been outside every day of her life since birth, because fresh air and outside light is good for babies. She has a snowsuit and wears wool socks and mittens. I don’t jog but a baby with a healthy mother, who gets fresh air daily, is in much better health than a baby kept inside.

Totally agree about fresh and my 16-month-old is outside every day (we’ll head out for a walk in a little bit despite the cold temps today), but you really don’t even need Patagonia for DC winter. Her $37 winter coat and warm socks/hat/mittens suffice! Obviously if someone cannot afford winter gear then freezing temps aren’t safe, but if you can dress properly, why stay inside all winter?

I agree with this. I live in northern Vermont near Canada and we take our kids out all the time in sub zero temps. They are properly dressed and don't get frost bite. We can't just sit inside all winter. We embrace it.

Totally! I was just responding to the posters assertion that we can’t possibly have L.L Bean coats in D.C. My husband and I moved here from Chicago and it’s not like they confiscated our winter clothes at the MD border

Kids are heartier than you think, drama mama! Every year there's some fresh new mom posting about how all these teeny tiny babies are so precious and need to be kept inside or bundled up in too many layers. OP - do you know that a lot of babies actually overheat in the winter because of paranoid new moms like you?

I just went out for my morning run and the only other people I saw were a Canadian couple out walking with their two little kids. They’re not afraid of a little cold!

I'm shocked by all the moms jogging with little ones in strollers as I drive downtown each morning. How stupid and selfish can you be? There's no way your little one is warm enough as you jog. Get a sitter or jog around your house if you must.

I hope you are joking. We went on a 30 minute walk today. My son had on a base layer, wool socks, snow boots, a neck gaiter, snow jumpsuit, winter coat, and a hat. He kept yanking his hat off because he was too hot. There is no reason to keep kids inside if its 20-30 minute walk or play. We did afternoon play too for about 20-30 minutes- same getup.

This thread is 4 years old.

Yes, but crapping on people for making different, low-stakes choices is timeless.

ITS the north face and lands end in Wisconsin .. thank you very much and those babies are in buntings with sheepskin inside. they are actually quite warm.. and cold air is good for babies lungs. They usually have earflap caps and mittens on inside the bunting as well.

We took our kid outside in the frigid weather this weekend, and she did in fact get cold, and then we brought her home. Are there parents taking their kids outside and then just ignoring all signs and complaints of cold? What on earth.
