Anyone can threaten a lawsuit, that doesn't mean the suit is meritorious.

Escalating and meritorious are two different things.

That is true. You are correct that the Justice Department is escalating its threats. Nothing else has changed about whether their case has any merit, so really this isn't news beyond showing how the Justice Department is flailing.

I think it shows how Harvard is stonewalling. If they have nothing to hide then why not produce the requested documents.

Exactly. I'm sure the data is damning.

And plenty of non Jewish whites with high test scores that are denied entrance compared to Jewish whites. That will never be investigated. Corruption and Hypocrisy.

Data "are". Data is plural which you would know if you went to Harvard. You obviously didn't read anything that was posted. This is three-year-old litigation involving claims by the Asian American community that they are being discriminated against when they have superior scores but are not allowed into the Ivies in representative numbers. the claim is identical to the anti-Jew sentiment and limits on the number of Jewish students admitted in the 50s and early 60s. Harvard is not producing the documents because it is "stonewalling". It has claimed the information is protected by FERPA. This is standard litigation posturing. The OP went off the rails not understanding what this litigation is about. Just google Seth Waxman Harvard litigation. The case has nothing to do with Harvard allegedly discriminating against minorities, URMs, Hispanics, Jews or the poor. It's about Asian Americans with the best test scores and GPAs not getting into the Ivies.

I'm aware that's it's plural. I'm also aware that only the most pedantic out there care anymore. From the WSJ: "Most style guides and dictionaries have come to accept the use of the noun data with either singular or plural verbs, and we hereby join the majority."

I'm also well aware that this case is about Asians with the best test scores being denied access. If/when the data comes out, it will be very illuminating.

Depends whose ox is being gored.

Delaying tactics, possibly.

When the Cal system ditched affirmative action, black and Latino students fell by more than 50%, so yes it does have an impact. I’m indifferent but the discrimination against these asian kids looks real, although probably impossible to prove given holistic admissions.

But our college counselor said it would be to our advantage to have DS identify as Hispanic (even though we don't speak Spanish in the household) because he is 25% Hispanic. So there's that. We are a white family living in an affluent part of metro DC.

I don't begrudge your kid availing himself of every advantage, but this shows how this system is total B.S. (How does one say that in Spanish?)

Fell where? Or did they’ve just end up at “lesser” UCs?

This is very stupid.

Anybody has the right to apply to Harvard and Harvard has the right to denied anybody the do not want.

Harvard should be allowed to do that if they are willing to give up all federal funding a la hillsdale

If they take fed funds, then it comes with strings attached

Totally agree.

Harvard doesn't need ANY federal/public funding. It's obscene if you thing how much money the have in endowment.

If I was a collection manager at fsb or Chinese intelligence, I would put resources into such an operation - I wonder if they know how much of a societal “pain point” this could be.

Only a tiny % of the nation cares; it's mostly grubby desperate strivers are obsessed with college admissions. Rich pull some strings and handle it, or just send their kid to Trinity or Hobart and William Smith or Tulane and they're fine. Poor and middle class are too dull to care about anything more than the in-state flagships.

OMG. This tiny percentage of the country is sick and tired of gatekeepers. I have first hand experience with this and my child has monetary damages. This “problem” isn’t as innocuous as you claim when future earninga are ripped out of your kid’s hands after having scored in the 99th percentile.

“The poor and middle class are too dull to care about anything more than in-state flagships?” This statement alone boils my blood.

I can’t wait to see where my nephew with a 1590 gets in and where he gets rejected from fresh off last year’s brutal killing fields.

There aren't anywhere near enough spaces at Harvard for everyone in the 99th percentile, even if URMs got no extra hooks.

And a class of students in the 99th percentile would be one dimensional.

Why do people get so upset about URMs. Be upset about rich legacies. Be upset about athletes. Be upset about the artists or actors.

What an incredibly insufferable and condescending comment.
