What's the worst thing a boss has ever said to you?

She told me that breastfeeding is the grossest thing in the world.

I am a minority woman. I worked in a big name hospitality company headquartered locally that is considered a great place for working moms but that was all bullshit.

Guy here. My (female) boss told me I shouldn't be leaving work at 5:30 to pick up my DD from daycare because "You have a wife. She should be handling that." I start work at 8 am. So yeah, bullshit happens to guys too.

This wasn't said directly to my now ex-husband but it was said openly in front of everyone on a regular basis:

"CFPB managers had hired only African-Americans to work at the consumer complaint intake uni. ... because only blacks worked at the unit, CFPB workers nicknamed it “the Plantation.”

There was the time he was telling me about how his family has had a southern plantation in the family for generations and then wistfully said, "It's a shame it's not operational anymore." I even confirmed with "But wouldn't that mean there would still be slaves?" and he double-downed. "Yeah, but it was really beautiful in its heyday."

This is terrible, but...

Then 2-3 weeks later he makes the same suggestion, as if he just thought of it. When I quizzically repeated all the reasons he gave, he called me negative.

I am "always negative" too! Ha... sorry if I can't hold back on telling you why a stupid idea is stupid.

My H put in for sick leave for my son and his boss said, "Don't you have a wife". His response was, "Yes, but I love my son so I am involved in his life."

"When you are in a meeting [any meeting], you are not to speak unless asked a direct question. Then you can answer that question only. Nothing more."

Ooooookay.

When I told boss I was pregnant, he shared a story about an old coworker that was pregnant with twins. He told me how she was very difficult to work with and concluded that it “must be the hormones” and also shared with me how he had encouraged her to go out on maternity leave early.

I was working at Goldman Sachs. I was an unpaid intern. I turned 21 while working there and my boss invited me for a drink. He was a VP, so conclude what income you want from that. We go have a drink, he finishes his, declares he has to go, and leaves me - the unpaid intern - with the bill.

He was a dick.

By accepting an unpaid job, you let everyone know you were usable.

My son was a preemie and was in the NICU for the first 10 weeks of his life.

After 4 weeks off, I agreed to work half days at the request of my grandboss - essentially 10-2:30 until my son was released from the hospital.

After doing this for 2 weeks, my direct boss (who I later learned had objected) questioned me about whether the arrangement was necessary. His words still sting. "Why do you need to be at the hospital for half a day, it is not like you are a doctor. You cannot do anything. This whole thing is interfering with your job." I went on full maternity leave that following Monday. Funny thing is that his wife saw me at a company function (I guess he told her what he said to me) and she apologized to me in tears. Ironically, their first child was a preemie and he asked me to talk to his wife about it.
