Question: The disappearance, and maybe even the affair, are of public interest. But is the content of the emails? I would understand if they appeared in the Enquirer, but should the serious press publish them? |
I knew a woman who worked for a half-dozen high-level appointees in the Nixon and Carter administrations. She said that in all but one case, their staffs were aware of the fact that they had mistresses. (The exception, by the way, was James Brady.) A lot has changed since then: The press no longer looks the other way (at least in the case of elected officials) The wives are less likely to feel they can't do anything about it. I doubt, though, that powerful men have gotten any less horny. Politics is about seduction. An ability -- and a compulsion -- to seduce is part of a politician's equipment. Some channel this talent well, some don't. Some are outright sociopaths. |
It seems pretty simple to me. Starting in high school we identify some guys as "winners" and some as "losers". What the winners win, of course, is the admiration of the girls. There are other metrics, of course, but that is the one that the kids are most sensitive to. Ideally this admiration is parlayed into a faithful relationship with one girl (perhaps the prettiest or the most popular) but anyone who remembers high school knows that there are plenty of "winners" who feel it is their prerogative to have more than one girl. And there are plenty of men who carry this attitude into their adult lives. And yes, plenty of "winners" are indeed narcissists. (I think the word sociopath may not be so applicable.) From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissist "A study published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin suggests that when a group is without a leader, you can often count on a narcissist to take charge. Researchers found that people who score high in narcissism tend to take control of leaderless groups." |
As long as someone wants low taxes and wants to keep the government out of my business they get my vote --now if I have to choose between the low tax cheater and low tax non cheater..I will pick the non cheater but it is silly to vote for someone who doesn't support your political agenda based on their private life. Sanford is a different animal though..he should resign because he was irresponsible in his office; leaving the country when you are a governor and lying about it is a nonstarter. |
NP here. Actually there is nothing sick about it. Jonathan's friendship and loyalty to David was exceedingly touching, especially given that Jonathan was the son of King Saul who had favored David and then turned against him. Jonathan had every reason to hate David as a competitor for his father's love and the throne but instead takes David's side when Saul turns against him. Maybe David would have been better off if he had married Jonathan. |
PS -- Yeah, now that I think of it, David would have been a whole lot better off with Jonathan than with that social-climbing slut, Bathsheba, who was ready to betray her husband at the drop of a loincloth! ![]() |
Wow!.. I haven't read those Old Testament sotries since I was a Kid. I'd forgotten what wonderful bloody stories. Writers of "epic" fiction are just trying to keep up. |
One hopes that David did not write love letters as cringe-worthy as Sanford's, though. If you can't pull off the sexy talk, don't try. Totally undignified.

I think David was more of a dancer than poet, but his son wrote some good stuff. |
Another example of someone else doing what Americans are no longer willing to do. |
LOL. Where did Monica and Rielle come from? |
OMG, those patriotic Dems buy American! |
Ignorant and not funny statement. Most of the scandals have been with American born women. They are much less accepting of affairs in Argentina (Catholic country). |
PP, it's just a joke -- and quite a funny one. I'm sure this poster knows that most of the scandals have been with American-born women. (Also loved the other pp's comment about Dems buying American!) |
Not only American, but in the family. Read about Bobby & Jackie: http://www.nypost.com/seven/07062009/news/nationalnews/jackies_doomed_love___with_rfk_177775.htm |
