But not of these are actual names!! Please make up a name. Don't do this to your child.

Slade, Stone and Thorn (and Brick/Brock) are soap opera names.

I actually know siblings named Sumner and Hampton (their 3rd sibling is Chase). Granted, they hail from the South.

I met a kid on a flight to the Caymans named Brac (after Cayman Brac -- where his parents have a vacation home).

I had a professor at UMCP who was named Tal Cottey (Tal short for Talbot).

Ashby is from the Blue and the Gray.

I know two ladies named Mishaela -- both are lawyers in DC -- roughly the same age.

How about Viva or Vinca?

WTF? Seriously? Why do you people do this to your children?

I named my boy Steven and we can't even find a mug with his name on it - apparently its too uncommon! He's the only Steven in his school!

My daughter is named Elena and we haven't met any others yet! It sounds like you are looking for something similar to what we wanted. Cecilia was our other choice and we were undecided until the end. Good luck, it can seem like a daunting process, huh?

OP. Yes - we must be similar. Still really liking Elena but also put Cecilia on the list from when someone mentioned it earlier. Very pretty name. (Though, wondering if that would inevitably turn into Ceci or Cece (sp?) as a nickname.) I also like Celeste a lot as well as Genevieve. And Jillian has also been a longtime favorite from the first round but DH isn't a fan so I should probably just take that one off the list now.

Um, I'm sorry, have I missed something? Are our children all destined to be serial killers if we name them a name that is in the top 100?

Anonymous wrote:If you want originality then the only real fail safe names to use are those from our generation or better yet, our parents' generation. I agree that most of the names listed above are pretty popular---Nora, Greta, Finn, Julian----I know 2 of each under 2.

Names that will really stand out in our childrens' classrooms in 10 years:

Our generation: Melanie, Stephanie, Kimberly, Heather
Kevin, Scott, Eric, Jason

Our parents: Barbara, Susan, Carol, Sharon, Patricia, Nancy, Karen
Richard, Larry, Donald, Gary

Now these are some ORIGINAL names!

Just curious--how old are you, eighteen? Because my name (a very common name among my age cohort) is on your list of "our parents" and I am 40--hardly in a position to be the parent of anyone posting on this board...

Not the OP above but I am 29 and the "parents names" are the names of my parnts generation - mid-50's and the "our generation names" are the names of my friends born in the 80's.
