Just in case you're not familiar with it, I'm a big fan of the Name Wizard site - http://www.babynamewizard.com/
Especially like the Name Voyager and Name Mapper functions. |
that's what we picked for our now 2.5 yo! It was easy to pronounce when you saw it, easy to spell -- it was "common" althought neither DH or I knew anyone with the name. he has had two Ethan's in his daycare class.... but no other Evan's (although -- we were out to eat a week or so ago and ran into a little boy only a few months younger named Evan who lives within a couple miles of us! Go figure....). I'm a PP who asked about Jacob -- DS #2 is arriving at the end of the summer and we are just stuck for another boy name! It's been so interesting to see the names that have appeared here. |
Most of the names people are picking are classic names that are very popular right now. Even if you find a name that not a lot of other kids have, it will SOUND like other names. Ella, Amelia, Cecilia, Greta, Elena, etc....
If you really want a name that's uncommon, pick a name from the 70s. So instead, go with something like Boys = Forrest, Travis, Bruce, etc. Girls = Hope, Melanie, Stephanie, Blanche, etc. |
My DD is Claire so I might be "like minded" in selecting names.
Some of the top names we had picked for girls were: Cecilia Faith Anna Laurel and for boys: Simon Sean Grant Brett |
How about Cassi?
That's my name - most people that share my name go with Cassandra or Cassie (with the "e"). Pretty uncommon. I like that! My middle name is Meredith. A little more common, but still not too common. Now everyone knows who I am -- if my co-workers read this -- I'm taking my lunch break! |
Carine or Wilhemina or Esmee. |
I know a one-year-old named Cassie.... |
And, from the same person, www.nymbler.com, which offers suggestions based on names you like! |
I've met A LOT of little Claires and Claras. |
Sawyer
Carly Catrin Hayes Brooks Maeve Mabel Nina Libby Stella |
I know 4 Fionas under 6!!!!
What about Megan? |
If you want a unique name stay away from anything you hear on TV either as a television character or in an ad. Madison Avenue and TV writers spend time trying to choose character names that differentiate from others but are likeable by the public and fit the image the are trying to create.
The names get a lot of air time and potential parents pick them up thinking they thought up something unique except that several million other people heard the same name. |
