Agree with this to a point. Some traditional names have fallen out of favor and would be unique today (Mary, John) but I know several Peters and Timothys.

There was a John and a Peter in DD's preschool class. And I actually know several John's under 5!

Darn -- we missed the "John" boat! Who knew the backlash against trendy names had already started?

Okay -- so what's the next hot trend going to be? Let's try to nail it before it happens. Is it too soon to bring back Tiffany, Madison, Morgan, and Chrystal?

To the PP with the John and Peter in her kid's class: if it's a Catholic preschool then that doesn't necessarily indicate a trend b/c Catholic families that send their kids to Catholic schools tend to use the same traditional names over and over again (ie: you don't see a lot of Ryans, Tylers, Caydens, etc. at Catholic schools, but you do see Matthews, Marks, Peters, Pauls, Johns, etc.).

Vivian . . . way popular now. Annoying b/c it is a name I really like. But, I know several little girls with the name . . . thank you Brangelina (their DD is Vivienne.)

Too soon for Madison for sure: it's still at #4. But I defy you to find me any young girls named: Bertha, Edna, Edwina, Elvira, Erlene, Erma, Ethel, Laverne, Melva, Mavis, or Wilma. Anyone want to start a trend?

Please don't bring back Tiffany...

I was joking about Tiffany. What about Reed? Ford? Cal? All strong names.

How about the preppy names from the early 80s? Ken? Kevin? Brad? Troy? Too soon to bring those back?

Well, I know 2 Emmetts, 2 Vivians, 3 Alices, 3 Celia/Cecilias and 3 Peters all under five. I say overtaken by zeitgeist b/c I think these names are on the upswing and likely to get more popular and widespread. So sure, they may not be on the top 100 but I wouldn't pick them if you are looking for original.

Anonymous wrote:10:26 poster here - you talk about the "Zeitgeist" but I've honestly never heard of or met a young child with any of the names I listed (except Genevieve). I have two young children, live in a neighborhood full of children, we go to preschool, all our friends have kids that go to preschool, so where are all these alleged Alices, Celias, and Vivians? Just curious.....

Anonymous wrote:Emmett's been overtaken by the zeigeist. Same with Alice, Celia, Vivian and Peter.

I also love Jane. I know a couple Janes but they are my age (30s) or older.

Some other ideas:

Alice
Eloise
Genevieve
Celia
Meredith
Nina
Vivian

Emmett
Ewan
Ivan
Noel
Peter
Paul
Quincy
Sean
Vincent
Wilson

It is next to impossible to pick a name, but I am happy to see that my son's name is not mentioned once in this thread. I know of no other children with this name and it is not a crazy name that will hinder him in later life.

Now pregnant with #2 and I have NO idea how we are going to find another name with the same qualities. It is so hard!

I'll throw Melody out there. Someone mentioned Bruce which I also like -- it's a nice manly name.

OT: Does anyone actually know of any babies named Emma? I know it's supposed to be really popular, but I haven't heard this name pop up in any of my circles.

OP here. Thanks everyone for the continuing ideas! I have a whole list going now of some of the ones mentioned that I really like or might like (and some leftovers from deciding the first time around). Someone even mentioned my name, Melinda, which I do hear every now and then but not a ton. I guess that was generally the type of thing I was thinking about.

Okay, so do you mind sharing what his name is?
