Malia - Harvard

I don't believe this. Source please? Her father will be president for a remaining 3 months when she's a first year. I can't imagine they'd not be able to secure a NYC campus that is relatively closed off from the rest of the city.

This is a joke referring to Columbia (GDS) and Harvard (Sidwell.) Read the whole thread.

Isn't GDS the Harvard feeder?

Agree. And with score re-centering you have to add 100 points to his score to think of it in today's terms. A 1306 is still low for Yale, and lower than my kid's 1450 which wasn't enough for Ivies either, but isn't terrible.

Why, yes it is! Six GDS students go every year.

She deserves to be able to go anywhere she wants ...?

Deserves? No, she deserves nothing. I would not be surprised if she earned it though. And I have no doubt that she will add a lot to the Harvard campus and the experience of the other students. Also, she has been exposed to some tremendous things and from all accounts her parents (and grandmother) have done a terrific job. She has always seemed very poised for her age and the one time I spent any time with her I was impressed. They did what we all are doing for our kids -- pushing them forward and helping them get into a great school. Good luck to her and congrats to the parents.

Yeah, right. Take her name and race off the application and run it through and see where she gets into.

Why is this a big deal?

Working for Lena Dunham is no badge of honor, its an embarrassment. Only a true liberal would believe it's an honor because only true liberals think that everyone thinks the way they do!

Also, no one DESERVES anything unless they've worked for it. I am sure that Malia is an intelligent, book-smart young woman but the fact that she is who she is, is why she got into Harvard. Let's not all make pretend like that's not the truth.

As the youngest ever youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate she should be a shoe-in but I wonder if she wants to remain a full time activist for a while.

Without turning the College Forum into the Political Forum, I could counter your statement with only a true Republican would believe it's an honor to be contentious, argumentative, hypocritical (birther Cruz/Obama), fearmongering, and a host of other adjectives.

Those attributes are no badge of honor (using your words). It's an embarrassment. Fortunately, not all share those attributes. I trust you are not one of them.

That said, I would think that Malia Obama is intelligent, in and out of school. If she wasn't, guaranteed it would be plastered all over every newspaper, internet outlet, and radio fodder.

She was almost GDS. The Obamas originally wanted their kids to go to GDS, but reportedly the Secret Service nixed it because of security and traffic concerns about GDS' Palisades campus. That's how the Obamas wound up at Sidwell.

This is one of the reasons why the new GDS campus is being designed with security and egress in mind, so that in the future the school can attract high profile VIP protectee students. Losing the Obamas still rankles.

The 90 foot mixed-use apartment buildings GDS hopes to develop overlooking the campus would be hard to police. Great perch for paparazzi and/or snipers. And vehicular access to the campus during drop-off/morning rush hour is going to be a clusterf*ck. Meanwhile, Sidwell will have a PreK-12 campus that's 3x as large as GDS's just down the street. If GDS's goal is to attract more VIPs, they're moving backward rather than forward.
