I am a Jew OP and I will smile and say Merry Christmas right back. Because you are being sweet by wishing me a Merry Christmas and because I am not so PC that I don't see that.
In this crazy world where people can be such assholes, having someone simply be nice is lovely. |
It's usually pretty obvious when people go out of their way to wish "Merry Christmas" in order to push an agenda. I feel bad for them, that they can't just enjoy their holiday with loved ones and not feel the need to prove something to the wider world.
All the rest- the people offering genuine Christmas greetings even though they don't know if I celebrate it- I don't really mind. A bit naive to assume that a stranger observes their religious holidays, but they're usually well meaning. |
Wow, OP. Just like the spirit of Jesus.
FWIW, if someone thinks enough to extend me a greeting (whether it's merry christmas, happy holidays, happy chanukah, or happy winter solstice) I will smile and thank them and/or say "you too." Not that hard. Not at all complicated. And, it doesn't diminish my beliefs or require anything of me than to just be pleasant. You should try it sometime, OP. |

It's fine to wish me a Merry Christmas, just don't do it in November, FFS.

What is so beautiful about crass commercialism? |
The voice of sanity. OP you have inspired me. Will teach my kids to say this too. |
This is just rude. If someone wished me a happy Ramadan (or whatever), I would definitely respond with the same. I may not celebrate it, but if the other person does, why make a federal case of our differences? I wish more people just relaxed and lived a little. |
Why would you wish someone who celebrates a different or no winter holiday a merry christmas? Do you really think Jesus would approve of that kind of insular pride? I know he wouldn't.
Christmas is ONE DAY. If I see someone out and about on that day, I will wish her a Merry Christmas. Anytime before that, from Thanksgiving to New Years--happy holidays. It's not PC. It's just nicer, more inclusive. |
How the heck do I know what everybody celebrates? If it's Christmas now, why would I wish someone a Happy 4th of July?
Now, if a person is uptight enough to say she celebrates something else, I'll wish her that too. Inclusiveness goes both ways, and your insistence on not hearing about my holidays does not sound very inclusive to me ![]() |
Exactly. You don't know, and since Christmas is actually only one day, and we don't say Happy 4th of July all of July, why not just skip it? Say Merry Christmas to any and all on Dec 25, and happy holidays every other day to cover the entire secular and non secular holiday season from November to January--there are LOTS of holidays and observations in that time. |
such a weird thing over which to get your panties bunched. Believe what you want. You're Christian. It's not like you're oppressed. Especially living in this area.
BTW Jesus doesn't love you. -Signed an atheist. |
I wonder how often it actually happens that someone says "Merry Christmas" and is met with a rude response, and how much of it is manufactured outrage. Personally, I've never seen it happen. I have, however, several times wished someone a "Happy Holidays" and had them very pointedly respond, "and Merry Christmas to you." |
Can you point me to which of Jesus's teachings tells you to be a belligerent asshole? |
I think its far beyond "the cup" which in and of itself is silly. However its the tip of the iceberg, it's not being able to say it elsewhere, it's not being able to "thank God" in certain places namely on a most sacred ground...the almighty football field lol. What is our world coming to? On a side not, I personally have no problem with someone telling me Merry Christmas and I am not Christian. Lived in France for 4 years, everyone says it there, in fact you never hear the equivalent of Happy Holidays. Look at any store in Dec. everything screams Christmas. Am I offended, absolutely not. I delight in the holiday and I do think it feels like a universal holiday celebrated by the world over. Sundays used to be a sacred day, now it's like any other day (sadly) let's keep at least a holiday like Christmas special and stop these silly antics. |
