No one has answered this: What SPECIFICALLY bothers you about the store being close the the school?

Having followed the Cherrydale thing closely, I strongly encourage the organizers of this protest to look at the website and facebook page the Cherrydale community pulled together. It includes lots of links, including news coverage of gun-related " accidents" that have happened on the premises of gun stores as well as the risk of robberies because gun stores carry a very useful product for criminals. Don't let the 2nd Amendment talking points scare you off. My recollection is that the majority of pro-gun store people in the Cherrydale situation were not even local. The story was publicized through a well-known gun advocacy group and the harassment began. Honestly, I think the shameless bullying did more to empower the community than it did to deter. Good luck!

Great suggestion and, yes, the people defending this are largely from outside the area.

No, they are actually McLean residents, perhaps your neighbors if you're local.

Not really, but don't let that discourage you from perpetuating the lies.

Did you ask me where I live? No. Honesty is your friend.

Now there's the 64 million dollar question.

McLean is pathetic. How come no one inform us about it? What can be do to shut it down now? Write to John Foust? Not shopping at McLean Automotive Service Center?

Even Foust will want to know your concerns. Why not share them here?? Are there any?

Can anyone please voice your specific concerns/fears about the shop? If you asked me why I wouldn't want a porn shop there, I could tell you, ad nauseam. Same about a bar.

"Just because" isn't much of an answer, but that's what the protesters told me when I asked. If it's a "safety" issue, please provide data about increased crime rates of other suburban gun shops. Let's address some facts here.

Anyone?

I remember the gun shop out in Middleburg, before Sheila Johnson moved into that location. Their primary clients were law enforcement, but yeah, wealthy locals tend to own a gun, in spite of what they tell you. Even in McLean. Some moms probably don't even know where husband has a gun locked up.

Hasn't the same question been asked over and over again? And still no answer?

Of course, people don't want a gun shop next to an elementary school. It's an unsavory business selling assault rifles that will cater to God-knows-what type of freaks coming into the community.

Paranoia much? Freaks coming to McLean? Can they walk to the metro? You know, freaks can't drive, right?

Would it be savory next to the cupcake place, Fluffy Thoughts?

Is anyone really surprised? If there is going to be a gun store in McLean, it would be in the Franklin Sherman boundary. Most of McLean's strip malls and multi-family houses fall in FS boundary. For that reason, FS is not as desirable as other McLean boundaries.

Isn't it sort of the "downtown" area? That's typically where you can easily walk from one store to another. I love Sweet Leaf.

Do you know what an assault rifle is or how it is different from a “regular” rifle?
Or, are you just spouting the anti-gun rhetoric that you hear on NPR or whatever liberal media you listen to?

It really is Cherrydale all over again. Don't engage the crazies on DCUM who act like it's crazy to not want a gun shop next to a school. I assume running a gun shop is like printing money and the profit motive is strong. Presumably it all comes down to the landlord, zoning, and the community.

You believe some zoning regulation was broken?

The pawn shop in Lyon Village has prominent signs on the windows stating that they will happily purchase guns. Honestly, it sounds like people just want something to complain about. Probably half the families in McLean have a member of the household with a CCW permit and keep a firearm in the house, whether they're willing to admit it or not.

Is the gun shop in Falls Church visible from the school grounds?

Not sure, as I've never been on the school grounds (or in that gun shop). It's on the main drag (Broad St) and surrounded by a bunch of other office buildings with a fenced parking lot and trees in the back-- the setup probably makes it hard to see from anywhere but right next door because of how everything is crammed in so tightly there. Someone more familiar with the area/ school could probably tell you for certain. It's not like anyone would have a hard time finding it and driving the 90 seconds to the school if they were so inclined, though.
the property in Falls church doesn't come near to touching the school property. The gun shop in McLean backs right into the school cafeteria and play ground

No, I believe these are the things that ultimately determine whether a business operates in any given location. Community can be very powerful.

It would be walking for 90 seconds to get to Franklin Sherman. If you have to get in the car to drive to the school in Falls Church, then it is probably not visible from the elementary school.

Are you worried that someone will buy a gun and walk into the elementary school? What is your specific concern about having the gun shop close to the school?
wow! YES! I hope you have your answer to your question. Who the heck are these people who keep asking what the problem is and if we are worried about kids buying guns? No an elementary kid isn't going to by a gun there. But someone who does can walk out and see kids playing.
