Biased 'bout beamers and benz

Well when I bought my used but new to me BMW I spent $26K. I could have bought something else -- probably something new -- but I didn't want to. I like cars. I like driving. I driving my BMW. If you want to ride around in a tin can, by all means, do that. It's your prerogative. I will continue to luxuriate in my German engineered ultimate driving machine.

The fact that BMW people think that bimmer is pronounced "Beamer" tells you that they are assholes.

+1. Several moms at our (public, not rich area) elementary school drive GL 450's. I know before I meet them I'm not going to like them. Even if they are nice enough they are very superficial and/or out of touch with reality.

I judge moms who send their kids to public school then drive expensive cars. It's not fair- I know that- but the things I'm most judgey about are spending money on country clubs or luxury cars, rather than your kids' education.

I went to a nice private school. My kids go to public school. We could send them to private but I don't want my kids to have the same experience I did. I think they are getting a better education than I did without the bizarre private school environment.

BMW owner here. I am not familiar with the particulars, but there is actually historical context with regards to beamer and bimmer. Beamer refers to BMW motorcycles, while bimmer refers to the cars.

I personally don't call the cars bimmer, typically the non owners do, often in a derogatory tone.

Exactly. I never, ever call my BMW "Bimmer". I call it my car.

I agree.

But I have a LV bag and at twelve years old, it looks nearly the same as it did when I bought it, it's just cracking a tiny bit around the edges. I will probably be able to wear it another ten years and give it away to my daughter. And it will never be out of style.

Anything with labels, you have to be prepared that people will look at you and assume something about you, that's just life.

why won't they ever go out of style? I really dislike LV bags. Seem tacky not timeless.

Because the brand has been around for 150 years? Just a thought.

Just because you "really dislike" LV bags and consider them tacky doesn't mean everyone else does. Fact of the matter is, they are timeless, they never go out of style, and you can have someone with a 20 year old mono bag next to someone with a 1 year old mono bag, and outside of the patina, it would be hard to tell the difference. Celebs still carry them, rich people still carry them, average people still carry them. They go up in price every year, and authentic used bags still fetch a decent price in the resale market. The classic styles won't ever go out of style, not in my lifetime or yours. Period, not up for debate.

But I'm sure you will still try.

For some it's simply an appreciation. DH is a car guy. Cars are important to him, and we've had some stunning vehicles. For him, it's an acknowledgement of his success and it's something that brings him pleasure. Other people have boats, second homes, etc. My father built cars from scratch. I understand people who are passionate about cars. It's whatever floats your boat. I do know one thing, once you drive a luxury car, it becomes difficult to go back. More features, more comfort, better handling, more sensitive brakes.

Great post.

I don't know why everyone here tries to pretend that they don't care what other people think of him, or how a showing of outwardly success doesn't matter at all. Yes, I'm sure everyone is driving to their firms in thirty year old rust buckets and wearing faded, outdated business attire from the 90s because appearance doesn't matter at all. I care about appearance, I care about looking good and I care what a first impression might impart on people. I feel confident whether I'm driving a Honda or a BMW because they are BOTH good cars, but I'm nearly 40 and I don't have to drive around in the same kind of beater I had in my college days.

I feel sorry for people who can't see the value in anything, even in cars and nice clothing. I know people who eat the cheapest, blandest food they can buy all in the name of "retirement" and "frugality" and declaring that it all comes out of the same place eventually. I put them in the same category as people who cannot possibly see a difference in driving a Honda Civic and a luxury vehicle. I don't want to live my life that way, sorry.

We have a BMW. LOVE it. It drives and handles better than any car we've ever owned (and we've had plenty). It is actually a fun car to drive. I do notice that people tend to drive more like jackasses when I'm in the BMW than any of the other cars we own. Not sure why. But I do love my BMW.

I am a vegetarian and concerned about the environment. Have always driven used Japanese sedans yet would like to now own a bigger luxury vehicle. I drove my dad's BMW for a few weeks and wow it felt so much better driving it and I would like a bigger car because it will feel safer driving my little one. I didn't think I would ever want an SUV. We were rear ended in a sedan and I know I would have had better protection in an SUV. Minivan is too much for our needs. So you never know what someone is thinking when they are getting a BMW or Mercedes. Of course I can never get a luxury car since they all have leather seats but why judge.
