For some it's simply an appreciation. DH is a car guy. Cars are important to him, and we've had some stunning vehicles. For him, it's an acknowledgement of his success and it's something that brings him pleasure. Other people have boats, second homes, etc. My father built cars from scratch. I understand people who are passionate about cars. It's whatever floats your boat. I do know one thing, once you drive a luxury car, it becomes difficult to go back. More features, more comfort, better handling, more sensitive brakes.
Great post. I don't know why everyone here tries to pretend that they don't care what other people think of him, or how a showing of outwardly success doesn't matter at all. Yes, I'm sure everyone is driving to their firms in thirty year old rust buckets and wearing faded, outdated business attire from the 90s because appearance doesn't matter at all. I care about appearance, I care about looking good and I care what a first impression might impart on people. I feel confident whether I'm driving a Honda or a BMW because they are BOTH good cars, but I'm nearly 40 and I don't have to drive around in the same kind of beater I had in my college days. I feel sorry for people who can't see the value in anything, even in cars and nice clothing. I know people who eat the cheapest, blandest food they can buy all in the name of "retirement" and "frugality" and declaring that it all comes out of the same place eventually. I put them in the same category as people who cannot possibly see a difference in driving a Honda Civic and a luxury vehicle. I don't want to live my life that way, sorry.
