You ever just go to a restaurant and the food is just basic?

OP you need to do a little research if you are looking for interesting food. Washingtonian is a good source, the Washington Post reviews are good, even Trip Advisor can be useful.

Obviously stay away from places like Ruth Chris - they are chains geared towards tourists and business lunches. The only chain steak place I like is Mon Ami Gabi. It's a good value and well prepared food. I don't know what Olazzo is but the menu looks like one of those old fashioned Italian American places that were popular in the 60s. Yuck. Look for real Italian if that's what you like.

A PP listed some good options for you. Some more ideas:

Rasika - surprisingly reasonable for high end food.
Oval Room
Blacksalt
Jacques Brasserie
Chez Billy Sud

For Italian:
Aggio, Tosca and Fiola for high end
Primi Piatti for classic Italian

Corduroy-new american
Makato- for sushi
Komi-for Greek
Rasika-Indian
minibar-José Andrés-new American
Rose's Luxury-New American
Obelisk-French
Bourbon Steak-steak house
and on and on and on and on…

Yeah I agree with the article; I used to go out all the time, but now I rarely do with the exception of take out.

I've found that if I want good food, I usually have to go high end or get cheap ethnic. And the cheap ethnic places are mostly in places like Annandale or Wheaton; true, there are a few places in DC, but I'm not posting here because I don't want them ruined. They aren't exactly cheap either, but cheap enough.

I can't really think of too many restaurants with a nice vibe that aren't very expensive.

My latest go to places that I can afford for normal special occasions (like birthdays, but not graduations) are: Estadio and Le Diplomate.

Le Diplomate is not about the food. It's a chain specializing in the experience and the setting. It's basically a place for hipster douches with trust funds

Yes. I might quibble with some of your choices, but yeah. Add to the list Little Serow, Kapnos, G Sandwich, Red Hen, dozens of little taco places across the city, Korean in Annandale, etc., the DC area has some outstanding food. Are all restaurants great? No, of course not. But there are plenty that are exceptional.

When people complain in the abstract that DC food is "bland" and then don't name the restaurant, there's really no point in arguing with them, since they likely are taking about Chef Geoff's or some other bland midwestern shopping mall refugee. "PF Chang's is supposed to be really great Chinese, but it was so bland!"

Sure, Komi is good. But the quality of average food here is way below average, if that makes sense. In Philly I can go get an amazing sandwich at a random bar. In NYC I can get a yummy bagel or Chinese food pretty much anywhere. In DC -- good luck with takeout! DC is nowhere close to a food city. Maybe the best of the best here is on par with the good in NYC, but that does not a food city make.

Really? So Komi, Rose's Luxury, Little Serow, Rasika and Kapnos are "on par with the good in NYC?" Stop. Just stop. You're embarrassing yourself.

Yes, that's right. On par with the merely good in NYC. I recently went to a random wine bar on the UWS and their small plates were just as good as anything at Rose's Luxury.

I agree. I've lived her three years and the restaurants are just not that good.

ETA: Lived in NYC and DC doesn't even compare. Even Richmond has better food than DC.

Maybe to all you fellow unsatisfied diners, try eating somewhere that's not in Georgetown or Bethesda or at your "club." There is plenty of good food to be had here.

I love that you can't tell the different between possessive and plural. This is everything that is wrong with people today: they're STUPID.

+1. It makes me think the poster is in high school.

WTF are you talking about? Try reading Strunk again before you correct something incorrectly.

By adding an apostrophe and an s we can manage to transform most singular nouns into their possessive form:

the car's front seat
Charles's car
Bartkowski's book
a hard day's work
or... a teenager's post.

Then leave. Housing prices are too high, anyway.

+2 I have lived here for 15 years and every time someone here tells me the food is so good at a restaurant, we go to the restaurant and more times than not, try to figure out why people think the food is good there.

Then again, everyone here raves about Founding Farmer's. Enough said.

"some teenager's post" is actually correct if the intended use is possessive you assholes

actually you are doing a pretty good job of that yourself. Instead of being a pompous ass, name a restaurant in NYC that is merely good--and we'll tell you where it would rate here. You have no idea who you're talking to here--we're not rubes.
