You ever just go to a restaurant and the food is just basic?

Anonymous
My friends and I have been going to a lot of high rated restaurants lately. Most of them fall in the $12-$25 for and entree category. Often I just leave kind of disappointed. It's like I have really high hopes and the food actually turns out to be more like what I could cook at home. I know I'm not paying up to $50 for just the experience right? At least at Olive Garden I know what to expect. The food is good and there are no frills. I know it tastes like something basic and it doesn't try to be pretentious. Maybe the next place my friends and I go to should be an ihop lol

I feel like I've had this experience a lot lately. So disappointing. Makes me just want to go to my local brick oven pizza place and get a nice cheap dinner I know I will love.

Where have you been going? Sounds like they're cooking healthily with less salt, butter, and MSG than a lot of chain places. If you want Olive Garden, just go there. What are you cooking at home? Order something different at the new places you're going to... not something you'd prepare or even know how to prepare.

No, their food is full of calories and fat, it just tastes basic. I'm not wowed.

Why? If you pay $15 for an entree, it should be damned good.

Good grief. Cooking healthily does not = basic, meh. You can definitely impart flavor to food with wood smoke, herbs, olive oil, tomato based sauces, pesto, etc...

I tend to agree with Op, it is very disappointing to go to a nice restaurant and pay top dollar for underwhelming food.

OP, yes, I have noticed this is happening more and more. It's really disappointing that I spend time and money and leave very unsatisfied. I've actually started eating at home more because of this. I can cook a meal cheaper and tastier than what I can get at most restaurants.

And some restaurants continue to raise their prices while the portions are getting smaller and smaller.

Yes, I have noticed this a lot. I feel like your post describes a lot of DC's restaurants. We cook much better food at home.

DC restaurants are often blah.
