You ever just go to a restaurant and the food is just basic?

I agree. I've lived her three years and the restaurants are just not that good.

Then leave. Housing prices are too high, anyway.

Why are your panties in a bunch over my comment? Do you own a restaurant? Do you base where you live on the quality of restaurants? I do have a job here....

3 whole years? Alrighty then.

I eat out a lot. Also, I am not emotionally attached to things that were good in 1995 and are resting on their laurels.

Been a while since we last ate there, but Makoto is NOT the best for sushi. It is known for its set menu. Sushi is one component and is done well, but you do not go there for a dinner of sushi. For that go to Sushi Taro and sit at the counter. And Sushi Taro is on par with a mid grade Ginza sushi place, or among the best in the USA.

Yes. I might quibble with some of your choices, but yeah. Add to the list Little Serow, Kapnos, G Sandwich, Red Hen, dozens of little taco places across the city, Korean in Annandale, etc., the DC area has some outstanding food. Are all restaurants great? No, of course not. But there are plenty that are exceptional.

When people complain in the abstract that DC food is "bland" and then don't name the restaurant, there's really no point in arguing with them, since they likely are taking about Chef Geoff's or some other bland midwestern shopping mall refugee. "PF Chang's is supposed to be really great Chinese, but it was so bland!"

Sure, Komi is good. But the quality of average food here is way below average, if that makes sense. In Philly I can go get an amazing sandwich at a random bar. In NYC I can get a yummy bagel or Chinese food pretty much anywhere. In DC -- good luck with takeout! DC is nowhere close to a food city. Maybe the best of the best here is on par with the good in NYC, but that does not a food city make.

Really? So Komi, Rose's Luxury, Little Serow, Rasika and Kapnos are "on par with the good in NYC?" Stop. Just stop. You're embarrassing yourself.

You wrote, "Maybe the best of the best here is on par with the good in NYC," and the PP is the pompous one? Holy cow, talk about a lack of self-awareness.

actually you are doing a pretty good job of that yourself. Instead of being a pompous ass, name a restaurant in NYC that is merely good--and we'll tell you where it would rate here. You have no idea who you're talking to here--we're not rubes.

Anonymous wrote:My friends and I have been going to a lot of high rated restaurants lately. Most of them fall in the $12-$25 for and entree category. Often I just leave kind of disappointed. It's like I have really high hopes and the food actually turns out to be more like what I could cook at home. I know I'm not paying up to $50 for just the experience right? At least at Olive Garden I know what to expect. The food is good and there are no frills. I know it tastes like something basic and it doesn't try to be pretentious. Maybe the next place my friends and I go to should be an ihop lol

OP, are you a really good cook? I've found that as my cooking skills have gotten better, the more meh restaurant foods tastes. So now I try to order things at restaurants that I don't usually make at home. Like a homemade pasta or porchetta.

However, I won't be joining you at Olive Garden or IHOP...

This is me as well. I have gotten harder to please as I've become a better cook.
