Susan Faludi's aging dad transitioned to female and went through a very "girly" stage. Now he's back to being just kind of androgynous. Her book and articles are interesting. |
| I grew up in a country where it is (was) perfectly normal for girls to have short hair, wear jeans and play 'rough.'. The US has a very narrow definition of what girls vs boys should be like and I can imagine that can really confuse kids, because they think that wanting to wear their hair differently or play differently from their peers immediatly means they need to have a different gender. |
Johns Hopkins Mn ed School stopped doing trans surgery because of this. Depression and suicide rates spike up significantly after transitioning. There is no scientific evidence that humans can change genders from the one they were born with. You are XX or XY from the moment of conception except in extremely rare cases of hermaphroditism. It usually involves other disabilities as well. |

They stopped doing it because of one professor there whose ideas have been debunked. And now they've started doing it again: https://thinkprogress.org/johns-hopkins-transgender-surgery-5c9c428184c1#.cebpw2r78
Surgery isn't the right answer for everyone, and it's not going to be an immediate solution to a lifetime of complicated physical and mental health issues that some people who have surgery have also developed. But that's not to be expected. If someone has asthma and you give them an inhaler, is the treatment a failure because it doesn't cure their broken leg or OCD? Trans people are varied and complex. Surgery is not the only thing they want or need. But it can be one helpful thing for some people. And nobody is suggesting that OP's child have surgery at this point, anyway. |

Most kids who think they are trans are not. Many are gay and just don't fit into society's stereotypes. A significant percentage have other underlying issues, such as mental illness and autism.
When they reach adolescence, a time of the proverbial identity crisis, they are especially vulnerable to messages in the media and on the internet. There are many reported instances of social contagion, just as we see with teen suicide, The difficulty is that the media is not reporting these troubling trends. And people who speak out are accused of being transphobic. At the same time, there is are many people who now call themselves gender therapists who are only too willing to make money off of this. Just look at all the gender clinics that treat what is supposed to be a very rare condition. They are literally experimenting on children with dangerous hormones and surgery.
