Rent a 2nd place in a better boundary

A teacher is lying about residency now?

New Poster. I am IB for a truly awful school, which my daughter attends. I would never consider what OP is suggesting. What kind of message would that send to my child? We don't have a city-wide lottery. It was suggested and it failed. If you want a guaranteed right to go to a great school, then you actually have to live in the boundary. Otherwise, get in OOB or move to where you can afford to be Ib for a good school (further out 'burbs for us).

I want to say that's great, but I'm no more inclined to judge the decisions you make for your family than I am of anyone else's because I don't want you judging mine. My kid is also going IB to a so-so school (still with an OOB wait list) and I'm so focused on getting involved and doing what we can to contribute to our neighborhood school that I don't have time or desire to get uptight about where other kids live. And I'm not looking for a pat on the back.

As for what kids see and learn, I have more concern for the ones who are OOB at a school - and legitimately so - being under constant stgma and scrutiny. What are we teaching them?

If someone gets a legit OOB spot, that's fantastic. But I absolutely judge OP and people I meet who talk about residency fraud like it's no big deal. Like I said, I'm not at a school that has this problem - those OOB can get in. But if I have concrete evidence that someone is doing this at any school, I would absolutely report it.

Yup! I teach at a school I would never send my kid to.

Wow! This is how high SES DC residents are able to cheat the system. Perhaps the ward 9 residents should just rent a cheap apartment, and thus totally avoid residency fraud.

Wow! So as a teacher, do you teach your students that it's okay to cheat as long as it's in their personal best interest?

Nope. The system does.

Perhaps they should. Since there are zero of them, it will not affect anyone.

Joking aside, I would not do that but then I am not in a position to need to. Parents get desperate to get their kids good education and I find myself reluctant to judge. (This said, if you can afford to have a second residence, you can afford to move IB for a good school so maybe I do judge).

It's not about renting an cheap apartment (which doesn't exist anywhere....even if you pay $800/month, you might as well pay out of state tuition or go to cheap private), it's about paying DC taxes. So if they change their address to grandmas house in DC and pay DC taxes, they're in same boat and don't have to foot cost for apt.

If those were the rules, there would be no need to rent in bounds, everyone would go wherever they want, and the schools that we are talking about would not be nearly as good as they are because families would not have invested in them with such uncertainty.

You also are setting your children up to be liars and there is a good chance you will humiliate your child when he/she is removed from the school.

But go ahead, tell yourself it is not breaking the law because you pay DC taxes.

There are lots of exceptions to the boundaries, but people are aware of them and you are kidding yourself if you think no one will ask. It will come up in conversation. I am not that nosey and how OOB families arrived at our JKLMM school arises in the natural course of chatting with my child's friend's parents. You also are kidding yourself if you think no one will tell. I for one would and most people think I am perfectly nice.

Don't worry lady! Your snowflake will survive mixing with OOB and black kids. It will be good for her!!

I am not afraid of people of color and/or different cultures, I welcome them into our school both IB and OOB. I do not welcome cheaters regardless of color. Go ahead and read my post about rules as being racist, but if this is what you model for your child he/she won't do particularly well on tests as it shows extreme shortcomings in reading comprehension.

You speak as if cheating is the only option. You have choices, you just don't like them. There are plenty of good schools in less expensive neighborhoods than those in DC with desirable schools. They may be in nova or md, or come with a longer commute or a smaller home. People who follow the rules make these kind of hard choices every day. You don't think you have to because you are "special". Your morals disgust me and I will turn in residency cheats such as what you describe any day of the week.

Sure, and where is your moral compass directed? Playing obstructionist with kids a good education? As long as your good to go screw everyone else? Right?! Lucky for me I don't have to report you as an elitist snot. You make it evident!

How is this any different from stealing a pair of Jimmy Choos because you want them but you can only afford knock offs?

The level of entitlement on this board continues to astound me.

Really, honesty and playing by the rules is elitist? I learned from my parents, who were both raised in blue collar households.

Insulting people who call people out for breaking the law does not make what you are doing lawful.

Because I'm paying DC taxes!

I'm bored with you ladies. Pissing you off was fun, but there is nothing new under the sun. Mount your horses, secure the boundaries... We are headed your way!!!
