Is this a chinese thing?

My MIL is Vietnamese and believes this, especially for a new mother and her newborn.

Wind is also very bad, apparently.

But OP has not returned, so we can draw the requisite conclusion...

Few things on this board make me laugh out loud. This one did. Wow.

I'm South American and we also believe that new moms and newborn babies should go outside after a bath or without a covered head until 6 months. And yes it's because your pores are open. I have no idea why that is but my mother freaked out when I took ds out at 3 months with no hat.....some of the other stuff you wouldn't believe!

I practice Chinese Medicine/ Acupuncture, and though I have not heard of this specifically, it would seem to fit in with some of the traditional theories about "cold" and "wind" (both metaphors), penetrating into the body and causing sickness. I wouldn't be concerned about your skin after the shower, but I would make sure your child's hair is mostly dry before going outside if it is a cold day. Probably not an issue in DC? I am in the north. I do know that when I used to do baptiste/ hot yoga, in the winter time, and then go outside bundled up but sweaty, I would frequently get sick afterwards. Was it related? Who knows. I also do have a molecular bio degree, so of course I do know about germ theory.

Clarifying:

Myth: Your pores open and close.
Fact: This might just be the biggest misconception out there, egged on by talk of cold-water rinses that magically make pores slam shut, and steam facials that open them up again. Unfortunately, your pores don’t open and close like a doggie door. Here’s what does happen: Steam can help loosen the sebum that builds up inside pores. Once that sebum gets cleared out, pores appear smaller. (Yes, we said appear smaller.)

OP - you must wait at least 3 hours before going outside after a shower. You know, just like waiting to swim after eating…or else you will get "congestion" and die...

Yep - southern european husband and I think I've heard ALL of his country's wives tales about how you're supposed to "protect" yourself from the evils of the world. Did you know the reason Americans get sinus infections is because we wash our hair too often? Or that you will get sick and die if you walk barefoot. Also, that day my DD had a headache at dinner was because of her slightly damp hair, not at all because she had been at the beach (in the sun) all day and was probably slightly dehydrated and hungry…

All these wives tales, but they keep on smoking those cigarettes and refusing to wear seat belts! It's a good thing I truly love them all or else they would drive me batty!

And outdoor pool must make your head explode.

I think someone was sitting in their office with a friend and made this post up and now they are laughing reading all the responses.

Question: how does this relate to the advice of using hydration no longer than 3 minutes after your bath for best results?

This is a cultural thing.
