Not PP, but this is just nonsense. We make less than $90k, in fact our actual taxable income this year was less than $20k and we are very comfortable. We live in a row house in DC that I bought 10 years ago, have a new car (2 years old) and go on several vacations a year including overseas. We are careful with our money but we live well. I just don't understand this mentality that you need a million dollars to live "comfortably". Let me give you an example, my 4 year old just went to a spring break camp run by DC parks and rec. It cost FORTY dollars for the ENTIRE WEEK. He had great fun. We'd do it again. There is no reason to spend hundreds or thousands on camps, the kids won't love you more if you do. Likewise, daycare, vacations, clothes, private schools etc.

You freaking bought a house 10 years ago!!!!!!!!! How do you not understand that people who are 10 years younger than you are facing prices that are most cases 2 to 4 times higher (if not even more)?

This comes up time and time again on this site. People who bought 10 or 15 years ago saying, "why do you need to spend a million on a house? Just buy 15 years ago!"

Do you realize that our salaries were also quite a bit lower than yours 10 and 15 years ago?

Am I the only one who is trying to figure out the $90k hhi but only $20k taxable? Something is off here. Are you just not reporting income to the gov't or something?

Plus, the $40/week camp must be an income limited thing. Fairfax County has sliding scales for some of their camps and SACC programs, but if you actually report a $90k income, you are paying full price, which is 3x the cost.

I'm the PP you are talking about. Because of significant losses our taxable income was less than 20k this year, though my salary was 90k. Also DPR camps are not income
based. For DC residents they cost $50 a week. DPR spring break camp cost $40 for the week and add my children were at that camp when I wrote that post I mentioned that price.

Hmm, my salary today is pretty much the same as it was 10 years ago, because of all the freezing that happened in the federal government. There was no way I could buy back then, nor can I buy now.

Seems like you should get it together then...i would most certainly eat.grapes and have someone fan me by the pool all day if i had that kind of money!!!

It was a few things, but most all stemmed from an inheritance last year. (primarily losses on sale of property). Also: a small rental loss, itemized deductions, some credits, and we actually didn't pay any federal tax in 2013. this year will be different.

For the record, we've never made more than we currently make. It's just that this amount of money used to go a lot farther in supporting our family. Housing, taxes, college tuition -- everything seems to have gone up except our salaries.

At least a million!!! What?? I have a house on Cap Hill and I'm no where close to a million. And I bought 5 years ago.

Living in capital hill isn't really what people consider the quality of life comparable to the middle class outside of DC. I would think that good schools, safety and larger homes would be a prerequisite.
