parents of 2 or more kids...what is your HHI? ages of kids?

I'm just amazed how so many people post that they earn 500k plus. I don't know how we manage with our low HHI.

We are at max 120k
2 kids 3 and 5 in full time daycare 1700/month

just wondering

$230k.
2 kids, 4 and 6. Daycare/SACC each month is $1500.

$220K. 1 Pre-K + aftercare and 1 daycare tuition is about $1,700/month.

Honestly, I think it would feel tight at our HHI except that our mortgage is low and we have no other debt. Thank goodness we're dropping down to just 1 daycare tuition in a year!

OP here , and to add we have a 3rd on the way. It just makes me wonder because today I went into the bank and was talking to the manager. She mentioned that she would love another but that daycare is killing her and that they cant afford it. I understand that I have no idea what other expenses they may have but I just don't see how its so hard .

120k, 5 month old and 3 year old. Currently renting in the burbs for 2100/mo. Soon both kids will be in daycare - over 2000/mo depending on how many days. We take one "big" family vacation a year. Pretty careful with money otherwise.

$185K. Our daughter is in PT daycare (~$1100/month) and the baby is home with us until he's one. So, it's a lot of flexing our work schedules, late nights, early mornings, weekends... but worth it to have the time with him, and helps save on daycare.

We'd also like to have three, though by then I'll definitely be earning more (am getting a promotion later this year) and hopefully my husband will, too. Our daycare offers discounts when siblings attend, and that plus the PT option will hopefully help offset the additional costs. We'll need a second car (minivan).

FWIW, I don't think $120K is a low HHI at all--the numbers on these boards are way inflated--but you're getting an absolute daycare steal for two kids in FT at $1700. Most places are way more expensive than that.

About to have #2 (in June) so I'll join in.

$240K. 2.5 year old and -2 months.

Day care for the 2.5 yo works out to almost $1600/month. When we add the infant it will pretty much double (we get a small discount but infant rates are higher). At that point it will be almost as much as our mortgage.

We're doing fine because we have no other debt (minimal student loans paid off before we had kids, 1 car bought with cash, etc). We also didn't have kids til our mid-late 30s, so we were able to save aggressively early which made it easier to have the lowish mortgage, no car payments, etc. We'll put less in savings for 2 years that we have 2 in daycare, but will still be saving some each month (after retirement savings).

If we made less, we'd go back to a 30 year mortgage (we did a 15) and look at cheaper daycare options.

Bank branch managers may not be pulling in a very high salary. Day care may very well be eating up most of her paycheck. Her husband might not be the breadwinner either.

Yeah, you have a great deal on daycare. When I first read it, I assumed you meant $1700 each.

160k
20 mos and 2 weeks
daycare will be 2600 a month when youngest starts
we could not have a third without leaving this area. Daycare is more than our mortgage.
